Face recognition on instant preview for Pentax.

I'd love to have face recognition for the instante review so the face would apear on the lcd with 100% crop so my focus check could be fast and easier.

What about you?

I think that's a pretty clever idea. Is any other manufacturer doing this now?

I'll assume you're using an entry level zoom lens, and if you can't see if a face is in focus though the OPTICAL viewfinder you could get your eyes checked.

You ARE aware the viewfinder has a diopter adjustment, right? Maybe it just needs some fine tuning. Seriously, I could take this shot of a very fast bike (among tens of others that day) using a fully manual lens and focus is as good as it gets. So I really have to wonder if either your diopter adjustment isn't OK or you have to look a little more carefully. And I wear contacts.

I picked up my sister's new camera at Christmas which had face detection. I showed my wife how the camera picks out the faces and draws green squares around them. She said she expected to see targeting information, percentage to hit them with the chosen weapon, etc. She may have played too much Fallout 2.

I guess this could happen, but you'd have to be looking at the LCD to see the face, which I am not going to. Part of the technology could be useful, as I think one AF issue is AF only cares about something being in focus, doesn't matter what. If it knew where the faces or eyes were, it would be a lot smarter. A switch could turn it off.

To me it sounds like wasted R&D. My K200D has too many automatic things, as it is. I don't use Auto or SCN modes. They should focus on making the basics work better (IQ, AF, speed, physical noise)--and these are pretty good as they are. But the kind of R&D you're talking about is probably going on in the P&S department anyway.

I do not want my camera to resemble a video game.

In fact, that is one of the reasons I enjoy taking pictures with my Pentax camera and my old M lenses: The process is very hands-on and real.

My cellphone camera has face recognition (Samsung Omnia). It tracks faces extremely well and you can even make it automatically take the shot when the person smiles (this seems to work on everyone else but me, which is quite disturbing).

Do I want it in my DSLR? Nah - face recognition is just not useful in group shots. Try it at a party. Which face does it focus on? If someone walks into your field of view, does it chase that one? What if the wrong person smiles?

I have my K10D preview set at 4x so all I have to do is pan to check focus, sometimes hitting the wheel to zoom in some more. Easy enough and takes nothing but 3-5 seconds.

Hey i'm very confortable with manual focus, i use rzs, 645s with no problem The feauture i wish to have is for INSTANT REVIEW only. There's nothing to do with your ability to focus but to see the perfect focus in the eye @ 100% in a sec w/o having to zooming in No matter what you are shooting you are focusing to a desired point right? so give me that point u desired to be focused at 100% croped on the INSTANT REVIEW. maybe is just me that would not be useful for nature photographers though.

Well, I for one apologize for missing "instant review" in the title and original post. Now that I get it, it sounds like an idea that will probably happen. It could even be useful if it worked reliably. As I said before, face detection could make AF smarter too.
