Shutter Guarantee?

Hello Folks!

I would like to ask one thing:

all cameras have a shutter Guarantee on how many shots at least the shutter will do before it brookes.

Different cameras have different shutter Guarantee.

Any person know how that Guarantee is for pentax k20d? (think it is like 100 000)

How is that compared to Canon 50d, nikon D300, sony a700 and olympus E3?

Regards Emil

Don't forget to factor in the relative cost of each camera's body. In some cases, you could buy 2 or 3 K20Ds for the cost of one of the others.

It's not a guarantee, it's MTBF.

Shutter is guaranteed for the duration of the warranty period on the camera body. There is no other warranty in place.

Well...ok. I mean how many shots the manufactor think that the shutter will last before you need to change it for a new one?

In any magazine-tests they speak about that number. It's maybe not a warranty just like Wheatfield said but it's like a recommendation.

I know for example that canon Mark 1ds X/XX/XXX and nikon D2x have a shutter that is garanteed to stay well at least 250 000 shots.

Now I wonder if anyone have an idea of that number for pentax k20d, nikon D300 and canon 50d, sony A700 and olympus E3?

Also would like to know how the quality of the shutter on the K20d is? I have heard any people said it is fantastic and other said it's getting slower with the time :S

Re:

Both the K10D and the K20D use the same shutter mechanism and is rated to the same 100,000 actuations.

The site below averages actual number of shutter cycles before failure so would be a good indicator of actual numbers "in the field". It also shows averages for many popular DSLRs.

http://olegkikin.com/shutterlife/

Note that the K10D has average number of over 200,000 before the shutter died.
I wouldn't trust the K20D numbers yet as the samples are still small, about 5-6??

Actually, the 1D/Ds II "only" have a 200k rating. I think the III is up to 300k. And they're not guaranteed, though I've heard of Canon doing out of warranty repairs for free in some occasions where they've failed with low shutter count.

ah, ok. Thank you mate.

One last question How long time will the shutter last on a k20d if you shot everyday with it? How I always shot with film I have never think about that, how many picts I have.
How many years could be posible? for me a long life camera is very important

The math is pretty straightforward. If you shoot 100 pictures per day, every day, you will exceed 100,000 in 2.79 years. If you shoot 10 per day, it will take 27.9 years.

lifespan (in days) = 100,000 / pixperday

Convert that to years by dividing by the average number of days per year you expect to shoot.

Hi Emil,
I don't think its something you should be stressing about or even keeping in the back of your mind as you shoot. It's a very long time if you think about the actual count and as long as you're keeping your camera in good condition and not abusing or exposing it to harmful elements too often, I think you can expect a long life from it.
Will you have some sort of repairs along the way? Maybe, but that shouldn't mean you chuck the camera and forget about it... if you do get to 100,000 shutters, then you've def. got your money's worth!
So go and be click happy!

Mine lastd only 50K

Well, both my K10D and istDS shutters lasted only about 50,000 each. My one year warranty was long expired on both. We'll see what happens with my K20D. I've got a 3 yr warranty on this one.

I could easily see blowing through 1,000 or more shots in a day if you're a pro. Heck, one guy on FM posted that he sends in his 1-series Canons for shutter replacement every year after putting 400-500k shots through them.

Thank you very much for that. I ask becasue I shot maybe like 500 shots every day, and I don't looking forward to spend more time reparing my camera then be out on the field shooting.
And well...pentax have closed much in scandinavia where I live, so if it broke I have no idea where to go
I hope it never brokes. Or that they can replace the shutter much times. There are no such thing as an old camera that you know better then your best friend

Thank you so much. A great example. but I cross my fingers for that the shutter last at least 250 000 shoots before retire.

Do anyone have an idea of how you can get a good copy of the k20d? Shall I looking for one that comes directly from production or what?

Well let me say like this. I saw too one shutter from D300 that was broke after 5 shoots....how realible. I think that much of the results where people lying...sad but true

Yeah, it's true...Hey guys! Have anyone ever think about the positive thing with that the pentax cameras have a slower shutter-speed (example k20d with only 3f/s).
The shutter will last much longer time then if you have a nikon that blows away 10f/s right??
If I where pentax I could use that argument for photoentusiasts with limited economy that want a camera that can last long time.

what do you think?
