K20d Infrared Setting

Well as we know it isn't true infrared rather it is simulated, however, I find that it does a pretty good job and makes for very interesting images. I prefer to shoot in ISO 100 as the images get overly grainy. From what I can tell, the k20d seems to render yellows, whites and bright greens as overexposed in a monochrome image, as well as some other clever image processing.

I find that the higher the contrast of the light the greater the effect. Blue skies turn dark black (oh I definitely have a use for that!), and colors get a nice glow to them.

Here are just some samples I snapped today. Looking forward to playing around with this mode a bit more.

2 more images, changing the toning

Here (a bit more serious samples) I tried changing the in camera toning by 1 setting only, a pretty big difference in the output. I would have preferred a bit more gradual change but nevertheless I can work with it just fine (and I like the output). Lots of fun!

Btw, I haven't tried Pentax's raw converter software yet, will it adjust the raw file to match the jpeg or not? I assume an "as shot" mode may be present in the proprietary software but I haven't downloaded it yet (save all raws to DNG currently).

A bit warmer (+1 warm)

And set to the middle (0)

There's an Infrared effect filter in there if you're doing JPEGs.

In post processing you can just bump lumincance for reds a bit, greens a lot, and pull down blues heavily, then convert to monochrome.

You're welcome. If you use Lightroom you can download presets from various places that do this.

Not a lightroom user currently, old school CS2 (latest version), but still I appreciate it.

Perhaps I should check out LR more (I am slow to change PP software I admit)

I'm hoping by the end of this (work) week, but probably next monday. I can't wait... actually, it's fine since I've got a couple k10d's, but threads like these are making me a bit anxious!
