Dynamic Range Expansion mode

Sorry all if this has specifically been addressed previously. I haven't done any testing to try to find the answer to this question so I thought I'd just rather ask.

The DR Expansion mode doesn't affect the raw file from what I can tell, and there isn't a way to carry those presets over into raw processing in CS2, does the Pentax software allow that? Also, does the Pentax software only process the native Pentax raw format, or will it do DNG as well? I haven't uploaded the software yet to find out, been too busy/lazy to do it yet.

Thanks in advance/sorry in advance,

Carl

Enlarged DR is just shooting with ISO -1EV and then applying curves for highlighting underexposured image.

Yes, I understand how it works.

I was just curious if there was an automated "as shot" app. in the Pentax raw software. In otherwords, if there is and whether or not the adjustments will show on raw processing just as the jpeg does when you enable it.

Yes it does affect the RAW file. That would be equivalent to saying that ISO does not affect the RAW file. "DR expansion" is an exposure mode, and as such, it affects the RAW file. It is not a post-processing mode like white balance for example.

The new version of the Pentax software does recognize in the EXIF if the DR was used or not. The primary use of this mode is to prevent or minimize highlight clipping. I never use it since Pentax DSLRS do such a good job of preventing highlight clipping in the first place. I am typically more concerned about shadow noise.

Would seem to defeat the idea of ETTR (Expose to the Right).

It may affect the RAW file, but it still may need support from the RAW processor to fully achieve the effect.
