Gridlines in firmware possible?

I love my K100D, but I surely miss gridlines to help with my compositions and vertical/horizontal alignments. Even my point-n-shoot has them.

Is this something that could be added in firmware if I somehow pleaded with Pentax?

I'm not going to upgrade to a K10 just for gridlines..

They're not in firmware, they're on the focus screen. Katzeye makes focus screens with various gridlines, I think they're working on one for the K100 now. Of course, this does not come cheap: the basic split prism and collar is $95 US, if you want other gridlines it's an extra $45 US (I know 'cause I was just looking, thinking I might get one now they've got 'em for the DL), plus shipping. Ouch. But they're great if you do a lot of manual focus. I don't know if Pentax makes different screens, they certainly don't seem to make any with focus aids. Perhaps someone else knows more.

I sort of have mixed feelings on gridlines - handy, but distracting. And $45 US if I decide to get a Katzeye!

Thanks for the Katzeye tip! I popped by their site and will probably go nuts when the K100D screens are available.

When it comes to rule-of-thirds gridlines, I actually use them to kind of *avoid* making all my shots repetitious! I learned about that aspect of composition and kind of got locked-in mentally so to speak, so I actually use the lines to force myself to move somewhat away from them!

Maybe you've done it already, but I think you can put yourself on a "waiting list" and they'll e-mail you when they've got the K100D screens available. Just a helpful tip to assist you in spending your money...

That's an interesting point! Never occurred to me. I use the AF brackets on the DL to keep the horizon sort of level, if it happens to be anywhere near the brackets, and of course the center circle reminds me where the middle is. Come to think of it, I use that a lot to avoid being to symmetrical, so I guess I am doing something a little similar to you. But I still doubt I'm going to pay an extra $45 US for gridlines, if I get a Katzeye at all. Cheap!
