Edge sharpness with DSLR

People are always talking about edge sharpness vs. center sharpness when evaluating lenses, but does it even matter with digital? With an APS-C sensor, you're pretty much only using the central portion of the image coming through the lens, right? So why should I care about the image quality (and yes, I am aware that sharpness does NOT equal IQ) beyond the center of a lens?

Am I missing something here?

Sharpness falls of more or less gradually, depending on the lens in question, so for some lenses designed for film sharpness may degrade visibly even within the APS-C sensor size. You may want to take a look at the MTF curves, e.g. on Photodo .

Right, exept when using a "digital only" lense, like DA series...
