Sears lenses

My name is Ted, I recently purchased a Pentax K20d and I am in the process of learning the camera. I have old sears lenses that I am trying to use. I just can't seem to get good quality pictures. I changed an option to allow manual aperature adjustments. Is there something else I need to change?
