Hi Neal,
k200d is a great camera. I've been using it for the last 8 months and it was fun. Unfortunately I never touched *stDL, so can't compare them. But if you can't afford k20d - go for k200d for sure.
On the side note: the 'battery' argument, when comparing k20d with k200d, is kind of bogus.
In some areas, the battery argument isn't bogus. I had to order spares from NY because no one in the state capital of florida carried a D-LI50 or np400. If they had, they would have been ~$40 each.

What goes around, comes around.

I started this whole dSLR journey in 2006 with the *ist DL and the Pentax rebates. Upgraded 6 weeks later to the K100D. Then moved briefly to the K10D, but bought the K20D when it first came out.

This week, I took delivery of a new *ist DL kit from Wolf Camera clearance. I was going to give it to my sister, but decided to keep it as a nice little backup camera. Instead, I bought my sister the Samsung clone, the GX-1L, for $228. For these prices, everybody should have one!

The battery argument is arguably not bogus. NiMh AA batteries will do very well on the K200d. Eneloops NiMh even better. There is no obligation for most people to win an endurance test with AA lithiums. Two sets of 4 AA Eneloops should last the better part of two years. Recharged carefully, without frequent quick charging, they should last much longer. Alkaline AA batteries, despite the Pentax claim of compatibility, are not suited to digital cameras. They are best kept in reserve to tide over those ten of fifteen vital shots in a field area where there is no electricity for recharges; and they are cheap enough.
