Yes yes, another Pentax vs XYZ thread, however, I am in need of help. I currently own a pentax k100d and am pretty unimpressed with the results I have been getting; a phenomenal intro dslr, but lacking in SOOC quality and the colors lack pop. I have never shot with * glass, and dont intend to make a lens purchase >$500.

My question revolves around this, if you could choose between the Pentax k20d and the Fujifilm S5, at the exact same pricepoint, which would you choose, all other things being equal (disregarding glass at this point).

If you can't get results with the K100D, you should definitely sell your car and buy a Hasselblad.

The S5Pro is no slouch. I have read some of the reviews and on the sensor technology that Fuji uses and they certainly have some very good ideas, you would probably be very happy with an S5Pro.

I've had K100 for over 2 years, and yes it's colours are tad warmer then sometimes desired, but you don't need to PP to get it different, just go to menu and experiment with saturation and contrast sliders. Try to shoot in both natural and vivid modes with differently set sliders in the menu and you'll see! Before K20 came out, K100 was regarded as Pentax with best SOOC output!
I don't believe tha pro(er) body would have more saturated or punchy colours, if than the oposite would be true, because on basic settings engineers would try to keep the colours as natural as possible, therefore not much saturated...

as for your Q:
S5 received great reviews when it came out, and it has great sensor. But so does K20. For me it comes down to lenses. If you want to buy into Nikon system, go for S5, if you have some Pentax glass and you're happy with it, stay with K series...

My choice would be to spend a few minutes playing with the in-camera JPG settings (Bright versus Natural, saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc) rather than spending any money at all. No reason in the world the K100D can't do what you want.

you are doing something wrong - probably you haven't even seen ANY of options your K100D has, try playing with settings a bit.

i've been shooting with K100Ds for almost a year now, and i constantly get amazed comments from nikon, canon, and olympus users regarding great colors on my photos. i even got one person switch from olympus and nikon to pentax because the results i get with K100Ds.

and no, i'm not post-processing my photos, they all are straight out of the camera, and i'm using only cheap lenses - kit lens and M50/2 (i bought FA50/1.4 and M50/1.7 last month).

Take a look at some of his photos. Most all of them were taken with a K100d.

(It should be noted that he apparently recently upgraded to a K20.)

I have the K100D Super( same ) and the photos look fine to me on the normal setting. I sure wouldn't change brands if you like the lenses you have.

If you have attempted to adjust you K100d in camera and still dont think the Jpegs are punchy enough then I am not sure the K20d or the S5 are gonna be the Jpeg camera for you.
My K100d, I had to reduce the saturation to keep from that blown red/yellow look. And I do PP my shots so I can re-boost the contrast / sat if I want. But that is just my choice of look.

Having said that, the custom menu of the K20 is much more selectable in terms of adjusting color balance and other jpeg looks.

But honestly, my friend has a Nikon D40 and his SOOC Jpgs are the punchiest I have seen since my sony P&S... he loves them. If SOOC saturation with no PP is what you really want to see, go to a camera store with you SD card and try the base level Nikons.

I just bought my daughter a K100D for Christmas and was quite surprised to see how good the default settings were, even compared to my K10D. But as pointed out above, unless you are shooting subjects that have rich, saturated colors, you completely contradict yourself in looking for natural, rich, saturated colors.

Out compose? I was under the impression that photo composition was entirely up to the photographer and not the camera, digital or not. I'm not sure if compose is the word that you are looking to use here. Can the sub 1K USD K20D outperform a 2K+ USD camera? I wouldn't be able to tell you since I have not used either a 5D or D3. Though there are a few on this board who have and have posted their thoughts system vs system. Benjikan and Marc L. are two that come to mind.
