I don't think that is accurate, the file system is FAT32 on the SDHC cards, otherwise the interface is the same.
I wasn't referring to the file system. I was referring to circuit design. Internally it is quite different in order to accomadate up to 32GB. However, that's mostly irrelevant in context to this thread. The change from FAT 16 to FAT 32 file system was only because FAT 16 supports a maximum capacity of 2GB. It compatibility issue is entirely firmware driven (that part I was initially incorrect about).

No, HC is different electrically and not a firmware upgrade. Now the firmware may be required for properly addressing the memory banks but you will always need the proper hardware connection in the first place.
The k100d didn't support SDHC out of the box and needed a firmware upgrade to do so. SdHC is also just a standard, I guess you could say so, for a card between 4gb and 32gb just like sd is for <4gb cards and SDXC is >32gb.

Just like memory sticks for your laptop or pc, the memory chips are higher capacity on larger cards since you obviously can't have double sided SD cards as you would with desktop ram...

No, HC support IS a firmware upgrade. The K100D and *ist DL added the capability in a firmware update.

Well I bought my San Disk Extreme 111 SDHC 4 GB memory card and put it in my Pentax K10D this morning.

We have a bunch of roses (Valentine's Day)for the womenfolk in our family and I snapped some pix of the aforesaid roses and a few of me, with my hand held K10D...affixed to my Pentax 50 mm F1.4 using natural light.

The SD HC card worked perfectly and the pictures were great.

32GB card compatible?

I have just received a Sandisk Extreme III branded 32GB card and get the memory card error message when I put it in my K10D.

It formats fine and reads fine in my notebook, but not in the camera. I have various 4, 8 and 16GB cards that all work in the camera, but not this 32.

Any thoughts?

I have a San Disk Extreme 111 4 GB SD/HC and that is the card with the most memory that I used.

I am the OP and I called Pentax Canada about whether or not my K10D would support an SD/HC card. They were very helpful and indicated it would. However if I recall (memory fuzzy) they indicated that there would be a certain limit with higher power memory cards. I suspect you may have over reached that limit with a 32GB. But I don't know for sure.

As you are Canadian , I would suggest calling Pentax Canada support and clarify.

Well I haven't double checked with Pentax yet, but the card does not work in my K10D, but fine in my friends Nikon, so sold it to them.

Thanks for the various thoughts.

FWIW, I have found the K10d to be pretty fussy about SDHC cards. I have bought several of the same brand of 8gb cards, and some work while others don't. The one 16gb from that same brand worked right away. All of these cards worked in a Canon SD880 point and shoot.

It's an expensive experiment, but it is possible that another Sandisk 32gb card would work.

I have not upgraded the firmware in my K10D at this point and SD/ HC cards work fine or at least the 4 gig PNY cards I get at BJ's do.

Hi Judi, you'll need to update the firmware in your K100D to read the SDHC cards (cards 4GB and higher). It's easy to do and takes about 5 minutes.

Go to this page and select your camera in the "Historic Product" pull down list of firmware upgrades. If you use the Pentax Photobrowser and Photolab, you might as well upgrade those as well (has nothing to do with memory card support - just gives you new editing capabilities).
