What is the advantage of using TAv mode (I think it is TAv) where you set the aperture and the shutter speed and the camera sets the ISO. It seems to me if you are playing with the ISO in Av mode it would be to get a certain shutter speed.

Just curious if there is something I am missing. If it is just its convenient thats cool

I use Tav when I don't want the shutter speed nor aperture to deviate.

If I'm doing Surf action shots with my 55-300 @ 300mm then I set Tav mode to my required shutter speed & aperture and let Auto Iso take care of correct exposure

Landscapes = Av (for me)

Program mode (using Hyper Program Shift) for just about everything else

Av - most of time, outdoor.
M - indoor, flash in PTTL, manual lens, when subject's and environment's brightness differes dramatically
Tv - sports, wildlife, flash in A mode
B - nightshots, lightnings, storm

Reassigning ISO to the front dial seems to be a very popular thing to do. I haven't tried that one yet. Is the functionality assigned to that dial then all the time or does it depend on the program used (Av, Tv, TAv etc)?

Depends on the program used.

I shoot Av most, but no where near 90%, i mix it up a bit. Av, Tv, P, M, in that order

I use Av about 50% of the time, manual about 40%. Occasionally I use Tv when there are fast moving objects that need to be frozen but usually manual is better. X when shooting with studio flashes and the rest I don't use that much.

Me too: Av. With ISO assigned to the front e-dial.
I don't have this option for my k10d...only can change the front dial to EV-/+ or nothing. I'm on v1.00 firmware, is that the problem?

Thanks for the front dial ISO tip. I just set up my K20D like that and it seems a practical way.

Av most of the time, M to blend ambient light into flash and when used with bellows or manual lenses.

As with most, Av most of the time.

Just started using Tv with flash, and found my number of keepers have jumped significantly.

Yes that is the problem. Update the firmware and you will have the option to assign iso to the front dial.

I use AV mode 90% of the time and M 10%.

I'm a Pentax and SLR/DSLR noob (although I used bridge and compact cameras with multiple controls for years), so maybe I haven't really developed a preference yet - I'm still early stage.

However, I'm concentrating (and preferring) to use an old Pentax-M prime 50mm on a K110D. With crop factor, it gives me 35mm film focal length equivalent of 75mm which is a wee bit longer than I'm use to, but I'm adapting to it. I set the aperture manually. Focus is manual, mode - Manual, but I use to AE-Lock button to suggest a shutter speed - although I often adjust this manually.

If I'm using an AF zoom lens - then I tend to like AV mode, sometime P or TV.

But as I say - I'm in early learning stages.

Av mostly, Tv for motor sports generally with auto-iso up to 600, M for astrophotography.

Starting to play with TAv mode but I still find it a little confusing (needs practice)

I am gonna give that a try as well, I assume that the camera will select the best shutter speed based on the f-stop and iso setting that the user selects?
