k2000d/k-m question

Hey guys. This is my first post and I've done a lot of searching first. I don't want to ask the annoying newb question. I know it can be annoying cause I admin several forums. Here is my question:

I am trying to pick up my first camera. I have basically decided on the k2000d. It looks like a good first dslr. I am going to buy it new off of amazon but I found the k2000d with the kit lens and flash for $539, but I also found the K-m/k2000d for $429. I don't understand the difference in cost. The second doesn't come with the flash but does that really justify a $110 price differece? Here are the links to the two cameras I've found. Any help is much appreciated. I am looking at ordering today or tomorrow.

Amazon.com: Pentax K2000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DA L Lens and AF200FG Flash: Camera & Photo

Amazon.com: Pentax K-m / K2000 Kit with smc DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL Lens: Camera & Photo

The first one is sold through Amazon, the second one is from prophotobags, which is the same as Carman's of Canada or prodigital2000 on ebay. I don't know if the second one has the flash unit though.

Should be the same (I thought all k-m kits came w/ flash, though). I'm sure others here have purchased from the prodigital eby store and can confirm. The only difference is that it probably ships from Canada. Worst case, it does have Amazon's guarantee...

ok. I have a followup question. I'm going to go with the K-m now (I believe). What would be a good lens to pick up in the $100-150 range?

Good choice - you'll be pleased with this camera. Its very easy to operate and learn with.

The K-M is what this camera is known as everywhere except the US. In the US only it is branded the K-2000. The K-M and the K2000 are exactly the same in every respect. In the US it is sold with the kit flash (I believe AF200 or AF220... can't recall). I purchased the K-M in Canada with the DA-L lens, no flash.

I suggest double zoom kit if you can buy it. DA L 50-200 is surprisingly good for not even 100$ you pay for it in kit.

Does what you're looking at come with the 18-55 lens? If so, grab that and play with it for a month. Then consider what your needs are. If you're looking for a longer lens than the DA 50-200 comes up for sale regularly in the marketplace right in your price range.

Just my two cents, but I'd start with the 18-55 kit lens and get good with what you've got before buying more lenses.

where can I find the double zoom kit? I didn't see it on amazon. If I can't find it, where could I buy that lens?

Oh sorry. I'm from Europe and it's sold here in kit with the DA L 18-55 and DA L 50-200. I don't know if this is available in the US. Although I believe the white K-m is available in double zoom kit.

As mbh said, in that case, buy it with just 18-55 kit, play with it for a while and then start looking for additinal lens that will suit your needs.

Th 18-55 DAL is a pretty good lens. Light and good IQ for the money.

The 50-200 is excelent for the money, but if you can save up and wait a bit the 55-300 is far better, although about $200 more expensive in Canada.

ok guys. thanks for all the help. I purchased the K-m on amazon last night. and great news for me, it's going to arrive on my birthday! i could not find the dual zoom kit so i went with the single lens 18-55 DA L kit. i'm going to play around with it to get my feel for the camera before i spend any more money.

I doubt you will be dissapointed. and I can assure you, the 18-55mm is an excellent lens. optically it is identical to the 18-55mm Mk II. and among the best if not the best of all the kit lenses offered by the major manufacturers regarding IQ. I think that it wont take to long for you to realize whether or not you need or want a lens with a longer focal length. and if you do, I would suggest the DA 55-300mm. I think it is the perfect companion to the 18-55mm and optically superior to the 50-200mm. be careful though. LBA can set in quick, and before you know it you will be eying your bank account for every lens you see.
