Scored my #2 Pentax (for quite a deal!)

Welp, as some here may know I am pretty impressed with Pentax, loving to death my K20D. While it lacks better higher ISO performance than some of my cameras, I didn't buy it for that, at all.

Quite the contrary, I use it 99% of the time at ISO 100 where I find the image detail to best almost all of the cameras I have used date (less only one), that includes competing well against the Sony A900 with the right lens (yet not quite passing up that beast...lets be real).

Yet, I need one more DSLR to "complete" my lineup, and ironically I chose a much different path, low resolution/high ISO performance. I ended up snagging a Pentax K100d Super for $229.00 body only, basically brand new in the box (box opened demo).

This will actually be my first 6mp DSLR, although I have used several. Of late I started adding some alternative photography to my profession to supplement some extra income, and that involves very low light shooting. I find a lightweight simple DSLR to work best in a fast changing low light environment, and the K100D Super should fit that bill nicely. High frame rates are not needed.

Although my Sony A700 does an impressive job here, I anticipate the less crammed sensor should eek out just a tad better performance at ISO 3200, which is basically what I am buying this camera for.

I was impressed also with the Dynamic range this camera is capable of when using raw files, and I particularly like the way the image noise is constructed with a priority on maintaining detail vs. destroying it like Canon and Nikon do (without a doubt to post lower noise levels than the competition.... cheaters!), not that I will be taking advantage of it using higher ISO's yet it is a nicety to have.

Anyways, thought I'd post that here that one Pentax wasn't good enough for me, I just had to have two of them to compliment my growing collection of DLSRs.

The K100D won't get a lot of action to be honest, I just saw a specific niche I thought this camera would fill well and wanted to share that with you all here.

It would be nice to see if Pentax or Sony would be brave enough to produce another 6.1mp DSLR with an ISO up to 12,000 or beyond (heck even 6400 would be nice). With the advanced cmos sensors and new processing engines I'm sure they could make a "poor mans" D3, and compete with it well.

Nay, those wishes will probably never come to fruition but it doesn't hurt to want. The powers that be have heard my thoughts on this matter, and I guess thats where it all starts.

Anyways I just realized I'm starting to rant now, so, I will post some impressions as soon as I get it (late next week I am hoping). Thanks for paying attention to my almost pointless post!

Cheers,

Carl

That's cool. The K100D Super is a very lovable camera, but I gotta be honest, at 3200 it is pretty bad. If I were you I would shoot RAW at 1600, underexpose one stop, and fix it in PP -- because the 3200 isn't "true" 3200 anyway. It's pushing 1600 in firmware and not doing a particularly good job of it -- you can do better with RAW conversion and proper noise reduction. The difference in detail between 1600 (very good) and 3200 (pretty bad) JPEGs is dramatic -- see dpreview for pictures.

Wow that's an awesome price! Slap a KPS 1.35x magnifying eyepiece and a DA40 on that baby and you'll have a nice compact kit with a large VF

I agree with the above post.

Shot at ISO 1600.

That's possibly the sharpest "looking" iso 1600 I've ever seen from the K100D. Good job ftpaddict!

Well I find 3200 raw better than 1600 and pushing the file, sometimnes you just HAVE to have the shutter speed.

THis was 1/4 second and 1/6th second hand held ......

KPS is that the name of the brand of eyepiece? I have the Pentax eyepiece OEM53, didn't know there were others out there too. Do you have a link?

The images I saw (just basic test images) didn't look that bad to me at all, in fact they looked better than the Canon or Nikon samples to me.. but again just test samples. Sounds like what you are saying may be the way to go however, thank you for the tip.

Yep! Also "Seculine". Here's a link to our local distro: KPS Universal Magnifying Eyepiece & Extender Set | Accessories

The specific model is U-13C. I found one on ebay: NEW KPS U-13C Magnifying Eyepiece 1.35x for Canon Nikon - eBay (item 230326951150 end time Mar-02-09 22:26:03 PST)

Compared this with the Nikon and Pentax eyepiece magnifiers, and as much as I love Pentax, this one comes out on top

Man, I'd love to have a K100Ds for that price. I just bought a new *ist DL kit for a little more than that to use as a backup to my K20D. I'd forgotten how nice that 6mp CCD could be. I shot these in an elementary school auditorium using the kit lens. ISO 3200 cleans up nicely, for shots like this.

forgive me for thinking out loud, but isn't any ISO above 100 (or 200) being pushed using the firmware? The ISO from 200-1600 isn't mechanically changed, so what is different from ISO 3200? Sorry for my confusion ...

Why we ever get rid of them at all.

This will be my 5th DSLR (that I have here, with at least 5 film slrs as well). Some stay and some go. If they work as expected, I keep em, if they don't ebay. Gotta feeling this one is going to be one I like.

I'm a minimalist sort, and Pentax does quite a bit with very little, gotta feeling this camera will be one of the same.

I'm glad I kept my K100D when I bought the K20D. It's a very capable camera and still gets a fair amount of use.
