Is it broken?

I have a K10D and tonight I had to take photos for my friends moms 50th b-day party. I have a 540fgz flash and had it set to P-TTL and was ready to go. Took a couple pics with it and they were ok. Then I changed my flash setting to Auto and also took a few. It seemed like the flash recharged faster in Auto so I kept it there, but then it stopped recharging completely and I couldn't use it. I thought it was the batteries so I changed them, but it still wouldn't wwork for me. Every once in a while I'd get the red light but it would only take one pic and never recharge again.

I ended up just taking it off and using, yes sadly, the built in flash Was not happy about it at all. Can someone please tell me what happened??? DO I have something set wrong maybe on the flash or do you think it may be damaged or defective? I really appreciate any advice I am given here. Thank you in advance.

I had a similar problem and it was not properly seated and locked in the hot shoe. Other than that you will probably have to drag out the old dreaded manual.
