Pentax make tough cameras: I dropped my K-m / K2000

Last week I dropped my k-m from above waist height with a 200 mm zoom macro lens attached, onto a wooden deck.

I am pleased to report the camera — to my utter amazement — seems to be fine.

Photos taken with kits lens a few days later, I should have remembered to change the white balance settings for the street light. The camera by the way has also exceeded all my expectations for taking low-light photos.

Wow, very nice shots. Is this straight out of the camera?

Nearly straight out of the camera

Thanks for the comment.

Small amount of sharpening and post processing in Corel Paint Shop Pro. Also made the horizon level in the first one.

cheers Stefan

Do you have a photo of the camera? Was there any scratches or crack? I agree, I'm very afraid to drop my Canon XTi because it's so plasticy, but my DS seems like it could take a fall from a skyscraper, not like I would try that or anything.

A lot depends how the camera falls. I dropped my K10D on a hardwood floor from about 4 feet high with no damage at all. But I knocked it once on a wall and the AE-L switch broke. Pentax cameras are rugged, but they also have their limitations.

Can't see any damage (just checked): it's more than likely the lens took the brunt of it, it being quite heavy and perhaps hitting the ground first. (728 gms).

A mixture of luck, robust design and perhaps even the fact the deck was made of softwood and not concrete.

cheers

It could well have landed on a button or nightmare on nightmare, the LCD directly on a nail poking out.

You are quite correct, they have their limitations.

cheers

Mine fell at about 1 foot on to a tile floor and bounced on the top about 4 times. The viewfinder is severely cracked and the diopeter switch is useless. The camera still works great. I helped shoot a wedding with it last week and the camera was damaged last year in August! Go figure!
