What mode are you in?

If I'm shooting landscape or any other static image I like to take my time and set it up in M mode. I've just figured out how to use TAV and for me it's great for street shooting. because of people moving I set the shutter at 125. A f4.5 gives me a little DOF which I like but the images are very sharp with the 43mm. The ISO is not a big concern for me on these types of shots so that is set to full auto. It still gives me EV compensation if needed.

This is my first SLR of any kind, so when i got it i immediately went to the 'scene' modes. I had to force myself to use the other modes, to try and learn what they all do. It maked me laff to see how many of you dont use them, (rightfully so) but even detest them even being there.

On my K10D and Z1 i use (Hy)P mostly, find that with Hyper Program, Tv is irrelevant. With my DS i was almost always in Av, and with my MX it was manual all the way :P.

With my K10D in order of use it would be
1. P (Wireless flash trigger)
2. User (Normal Flash, P mode)
3. X
4. M
5. TAv
6. Av

don't use Sv or Tv on the K10D, as i find the other modes more effective at these functions.

80% M
15% Av when I need to work quickly but DoF is an issue
5% Tv when I'm shooting sports

You'll see that once you feel comfortable with the camera and deeply understand the aperture / shutter relations, you will likely never use P again. On the k100d you can assign the AE-L button to set the program line Aperture and Shutter when in Manual mode, and you change it to suit your shot.

I find that P rarely chooses a combination suitable for what I'm shooting. It usually restricts the DOF too much for my taste.

Believe it or not I only shoot in manual mode 100% of the time and it's the only mode I understand. I find Tv, Av and all others far too confusing and I end up with terrible shots. There are many things about the camera that I still need to discover and learn.

Most manual mode too. But thats because I use old lenses and I shoot alot of flash. (manual also)

I'm an Av guy most of the time, unless I don't like what the meter is telling me; probably a habit from my OM10 days. I even use Av on my PowerShot. P always feels like autopilot, let alone scene modes - but I might try the Moving Object mode sometime since it sets Continuous AF without going menu-diving (I have a K100D).
I also like Av mode for flash (when I actually use flash) - it's like using my old Vivitar 283 but with more aperture choices.

It is very interesting to me to see how many people are using their Pentax cameras in modes other that P or Green.

While the automatic modes of our cameras will take acceptable images 95% of the time - it is really refreshing to see that the majority of us are trying to shoot in that last 5%. I like the idea of using the protein based computer behind the view finder rather than depending on the little bit of silicon encased in plastic - some where in there.

P about 95% of the time. Av or Tv for the rest depending if it is fast moving, or goes from here to there. I think I used M for a couple shots :-) I have no pretense that I have any technique.

depends on my mood. usually in M or Av. .0001% in green. back then I shot mostly in P, but found it to be limited in more ways than one. recently i've been doing Sv and TAv, but thats on a rare occasion, the same also goes for Tv.

Generally I am in Av mode with the exposure compensation linked to the front (Tv) dial. This works very well for most situations, but lately I have found that I have been using M(manual exposure) mode more and more.

It's interesting to note how many folk are "graduating" from automatic modes towards more "manual" methods in their working processes.

My "graduation" from less Av to more Manual modes is more to do with how I am using the camera and what I have been taking photos of rather than any "graduation". I have always used Manual modes, it's just that lately I have been shooting more of the type of photos where Manual mode is beneficial.
