K2000 (K-m) kit lenses

Hello,
I just wanted to ask, how much I could rely on kit lenses 18-55 and what are the differences between them and DA 18-55?

it should be pretty 'reliable'... never had one break on me

they are over all cheap and not so great quality though. take a look at the 17-70 f4 ... thats a nice mid level lens.

Welcome to Photozone!

some reviews there for you.

as far as I know, the DAL 18-55mm is optically identical to the DA 18-55mm II. so optical performance will (not counting photographer skills) be the same as that of the regular DA kit. the DAL is just a lightened stripped down version. (no 'quick shift' focusing, plastic mount). same goes for the DA 50-20mm. you can maybe sell your DAL for a DA II, but I don't see the point.

I have both and prefer the sharpness and clarity of the DA over the DAL. focusing seems faster too with the DA.

I have the DAL 18-55mm and focus is faster because of the K-m, not because of the lens. I also have the old 18-55mm and its AF is faster on the k-m than my K110D. the DAL is superior to my older copy of the DA but again its optically identical to the DA II, so there should be no difference in optical performance.

The DAL and DA are optically identical. The EXIF data for each is the same. The DAL 18-55 bears the EXIF tag of the DA 18-55 (II of course).

They are constructed of different materials, but the optical formula and EXIF data are identical.

I like mine.

Albinas,

As others here have mentioned, there are 3 versions of the 18-55:
DA18-55
DA18-55 II
DAL18-55

The "II" and DAL versions have identical optical formulas, but I don't know if they are optically-identical.

I only have experience using the DAL. In my real-world experience:
@18mm - good, usable with some weakness, decent wide-open, some-softness in the corners, useful close-focusing, some weakness at far-distances
@ ~25mm - very good, even wide-open
@ 45~55mm - poor, very-soft wide open or one stop down, the performance improves for this focal-length at close-distances where the 1:3 magnification is also convenient.

The "I" version was also supposed to be soft at the long-end, but if it was worse than my DAL (with II lens construction) then I would be appalled. There is often production-variation on zooms, so my copy of the lens may be a poor one.

I haven't used the DA50-200, but it from the photozone.de tests it is best in the middle, weaker at the long-end and wide-end. They don't test between 50mm~100mm nor 100mm~200mm, so it's probably strongest at 75mm~150mm.

In summary, the kit of 18-55 + 50-200 is weakest in the overlapping range (~50mm). The kit pair is decent in the 18-35mm and 75~150mm ranges, and also for some close-up work.

If you wanted to supplement the kit pair, the FA50/1.4 (or any 50mm lens) would neatly fill the gap in between those 2 lenses.
