JPEG output - in-camera vs. in-PPL

When I shoot in-camera with RAW+JPEG (***), the JPEG filesizes are approx. 3MB.
When I convert in-PPL from RAW to JPEG the filesizes are:
(|||||, Highest-Quality) = ~6MB
(||||_, High-Quality) = ~4MB
(|||__, Medium-Quality) = ~3MB.

So, I'm wondering if the 3-star (***) setting in the camera is equal to the 3-bar (|||__) setting in PPL?

Would it be that the JPEG converter in the camera is "medium-quality" to keep the image-to-image speed reasonable?

I only tested one image in PPL at the above 3 PPL settings...frankly, I can't see a difference in the 3 settings when viewing at 100%.
Wondering what other people's experience is?

Shoot something with a lot of sky and pixel peep the colors in the skies -- that's where jpeg compression really will show up noticably. If you don't see any difference still, just shoot on the lower setting to get smaller files.

Or leafy tree branches against sky -- the millions of fractal high-contrast details stress out the algorithm.

Yup, that works too... I've seen some weird pixelated halos that way
