K20D body only or kit?

Ok. So I am upgrading from the K10D to the K20D. I have heard so many positive things about the 18-55mm II vs the original one. I was never really satisfied with the 18-55mm that came with the K10D. I would really like the wide angle of it. I have the 40mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.4 and then a telephoto. Should I get the new kit lens or just the body?

FYI I am getting the K20D and keeping the K10D to give to my husband and also to use as a back up...

I never had the 18-55I, but now I do have the 18-55DAL which is optically like the II, and I'd say it's worth having, esepcially if you get it for a nominal price.

Might make a very nice lens for your husband to use on the K10D.

If you don't mind spending a little more, get the kit. The 18-55II is a better lens and you could use the first lens(and body) as a backup. Also your husband will have a kit setup that is almost as comprable to yours.

I'll say the same thing. Go for the K20D Kit.

I replaced my kit lens with the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 Macro lens and I'm extremely pleased with it, but it will of course be more expensive, but that would be my personal choice.

I don't think there is dramatic difference between I & II. The kit lens is good to have, but i don't think you will use it that much since you have DA 40mm and FA 50mm. At the end it really comes to the price difference. Anything over $100 is not worth it.

Much as I love the DA40, I'd be frustrated too if that was the widest lens I had. I'd either get the kit zoom or maybe a prime in whatever focal length interests you. If you don't have much experience with focal lengths wider than 40mm, I'd get the zoom - then maybe you'll learn from experience what focal length you might like in a wider prime. I find I like 28mm a lot, so I got an M28/2.8 (which costs no more than the kit lens). Although that's still not very wide, it's enough that I normally leave the kit lens at home. But I'm happy to have the zoom for when I know I *will* want something wider than 28mm.

Sure seems like your significant other half is getting the rough end of the deal here, sweetie. Instead of palming him off with your unwanted cast-off's, why not go the whole hog and buy your long-suffering hubbie a matching K20D too ? After all, as the well-worn adage goes: "what's good for the goose" etc….

……retires to convenient nuclear safety bunker and waits for the inevitable sparks to fly……kaboom !

Best regards
Richard (MCP life member….lol !)

Confused...
The K10D isn't a cast off. My husband really likes it.. And are you wiling to pay the extra $700 for a second K20D?

Hi again madisonphotogrl

I trust you realise I was just "pulling your leg" a little and am relieved to hear that hubby is totally happy with the situation.

Best regards
Richard

He is getting a great camera. I am going to follow in your footsteps and get me a K20D also. I will try to give mine to my wife, but she doesn't like sophisicated cameras. Even if I set it up in full auto, it is still intimidating to her. Darn! Looks like I'm gone have two GREAT cameras!

I bought the K20D kit, and after using it for a week, I bought the DA 16-45, which I like a lot. Maybe I just got a bad copy of the 18-55 II, but mine does not do justice to the K20D's sensor. Since you already have good primes, you may be disappointed with the kit lens.

The difference in price on Amazon is currently $120... 790 vs 670. I've seen kit lenses go on the marketplace here for around $80, and I bet you could get one for even less. In fact I think I've seen the 16-45 go for the mid 200's in the marketplace recently... from what I've heard, I think I'd go with the 16-45 instead since I've heard it's sharper at wider apertures than the kit. If you can get the kit for $80 and below difference, I'd say go for it as you can always get your money back by selling it later...

Good luck w/ your purchase!

You could get the new kit lens and share it between you and hubby. The old kit lens could become the backup wide-angle lens for you, and the main lens for the K10D unless you don't plan to shoot the new one on any given outing. Then hubby could shoot the newer one.
