reeftool: You realize Canon is sitting on around 8.5 BILLION in cash? And they have virtually no long term debt. Sure they are getting hurt by the downturn, but they are certainly better positioned than many to ride it through.

Thanks...I think it will be a great addition to my digital (and film) Pentax system.

I'm thinking of getting a new Pentax KM...tomorrow. I have had Pentax SLR's for 41 years.

Presently have a K10D, 16-45, 50 f1.4, 55-300, 360 flash. Very happy with them.

Want the KM as a carry around and as a second body for the K10D...I take a lot of pix.

Still worried in the back of my mind ...will Pentax be around in 1 year...2years///5 years ?

I know...who knows...will GM be around or Ford ?

Anyways any last minute recommendations as to be honest I've also thought of getting a Nikon D60 with 18-55...in case I have to start over...if Pentax goes.

What do you think ?

BTW I'm not trashing Pentax...my K10D works perfectly and I've been a Pentaxian before there was such a word...way before...but I'm retired and wondering should I spread my risk ?

Samsung also has that much cash, but that's not meaningful. Which company is better diversified? Which company would NEVER be allowed to fail by their govt?

Just get the K-M as your carry around camera and call it a day. I don' think Pentax is going anywere anytime soon!

I will...it's noticeably lighter and smaller than the K10D with battery grip.

Not to knock my Pentax stuff, but my carry-around camera is a Panasonic TZ-1. Why? Because I can just put it in my pocket and carry it around. It has SR, 10:1 zoom, and a nice Leica lens. My Pentax DSLR is for stuff the TZ-1 won't do.

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC8...nice camera, has the Leica lens but although smaller...the pix aren't as great as the DSLR and no interchangeable lens...although it has a mild telephoto.

I know Panasonic say it is a Leica lens..but mine doesn't compare with my Leica lens on my old Leica rangefinder.

I have a Panasonic Lumix LX3 to back up my K200D and its rather large DA* f2.8 lenses. And while you're probably right - the mass-produced Leica lenses on all those Panasonic cameras probably aren't quite as great as those legendary Leica lenses of old - I'm still very impressed with both the camera and lens.

I was thinking of picking up a K2000/KM as a slightly smaller and lighter alternative to the K200D for less-critical photo-taking but when I might still want a DSLR. In fact, I thought the KM with the DA 18-250 lens might be great for certain family outings or sporting events. But many ballparks/stadiums still won't let you in with a camera and lens combo of that size. So I may have to default to a superzoom P&S (Panasonic Lumix FZ28?) as my in-between digital camera.

Hope you are enjoying your new "toy" as I am enjoying my K20D at the moment. I bring it along with me daily to work. You will never know when it will come in useful . . .

Yes...I plan to carry the KM with it's 18-55 kit lens in a small camera case with me on a daily basis..for exactly the reason you state....you never know when it will come in useful.

I mostly enjoy taking pictures of wildlife, birds, etc. and living in Canada...it's a bonus ...lots of wildlife around. I am also thinking of attaching my old Pentax A 35-105 Macro (digital conversion 57- 160 mm) for countryside excursions. Great lens...cost me a bundle in '84 when I bought it new, excellent quality..but on the heavy side.

I also enjoy taking pictures of hot rods, special interest vintage vehicles...for these pix the 18-55 will be used.

I also anticipate there will be a number of times I'm carrying both the KM and the K10D...
