I seem to have slightly better AF and SR performance, with less hunting on my slower focusing lenses. AF "lock" seems quicker as does MF confirmation.

Yes, it could all be a placebo effect. It also could be some K20Ds were better calibrated "out-of-the-box" than others. That could explain the wide variety of reports about improvements.

Either way, nothing seems to have become worse from the update.

We thought the the AF was a problem, but all we really needed was a better placebo.

Thanks, Pentax!

I confirmed this morning that manual exposures up to 15 seconds now do not trigger a Dark Frame Subtraction. The fact that Bulb still does is a disappointment but at least we can get this far now without automatic DFS.

Is this behaviour dependant upon a setting in the Custom Menu?

Yes. If 17 is set to 2 then anything longer then .3 sec will have dark frame. If set to 1 then this is auto. The camera will do a dark frame “automatically activated according to the situation”. On my camera this is for speeds longer then 15 sec. That it is “automatically” tends to lead one to believe that there is some “situation” (temp?) that may have the camera do a DF for speeds less the 15 sec. If someone finds out what that would be interesting.

I can imagine intensive use of live preview or long continuous shooting sessions that heat up the sensor enough to trigger the dark frame. Or a camera left in the trunk of a sun heated car, where it can easily peak over 70 Celsius.

My turn to test this. What I used for testing: Sigma 17-70 extended to 70mm and an unlit bathroom (lit only by light from a hallway).
No changes to unsuccessful focus lock from what I could tell. However, with the popup flash as assist, the latest firmware seems to lock when the old 1.01 didn't. For successful locking, it's maybe marginally faster, but barely noticeable so I'm not sure it's real or not.
So the bottom line is something related to AF seems to have changed, but only in somewhat extreme situations.

Hi. I have just bough the K20D and it shows the fireware as 1.00 has there been any gig changes between the one I have and the v1.03. It seems as there are not any big changes from what I can see. All the best. Kevin

Kevin I installed this firmware update to my new K20D about a week ago, mine too was V1.00 when I installed the new update. I feel I have slight improvement in AF speed. From what I have read and what I gleaned from the Pentax website is that the V1.03 is an all inclusive update, in other words there is no need to track down a V1.01/V1.02 update first.

I just rec'd my new k20D 4 days ago...I have looked diligently through the menus, but can't seem to locate the firmware version. How does one go about determining the firmware version on the k20D? Thanks.

you hardly need to check, it will most certainly not be 1.03, but one of the early ones. follow the update procedure, the first step will show you the current firmware version, and will prompt you to update to the new one (so you can skip before doing the update, if you change your mind).

i guess the short answer to your question would be "turn the camera on holding down the menu button" (but i am not 100% sure)

Hold down the menu button when you turn it on.

You're welcome.

After 15 minutes of looking through all the menus at least 3 times...I was so afraid that I had missed the obvious. I hadn't seen this "tip" to display the firmware version in the manual. I do notice that the "tip" to display the firmware version number is on Pentax's firmware download page. You were right, mine is version 1.01.

Now I have gone to the Pentax website...thinking that I was 2 versions removed from the current Firmware version...but I notice that its version 1.03 and version 1.01 listed on the download page. What happened to version 1.02 or does Pentax only use odd numbers as the last digit for its Firmware version numbers?

Thanks.
