Memory Card Error on k100d

I just bought my k100d today, along with a new memory card, a lexar 4gig. I got home and inserted the memory card in the camera and I get a message saying "memory card error". How can I fix this? Is there something wrong with the camera or the memory card? Please keep everything in layman's terms, as I'm a complete newbie who's having a bit of a panic attack of this.

Depending on what firmware it has it may not be able to recognize the 4gig card. You may need to use a smaller card and update the firmware to the latest to recognize the 4gig SDHC card.

Current firmware and instructions for loading can be found at;

http://www.pentaximaging.com/support/self-support/

Under firmware select the dropdown for historic product, then select the K100D.

hope this helps,

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll go get a 2gig card tomorrow. If I get the new card do I have to update the firmware?

There isn't really a reason to not update the firmware that I can think of. If you shoot RAW you will appreciate the benefit of a larger card.

Any standard SD cards will work. You need the firmware upgrade to use SDHC cards which are usually anything 4gig and larger. As Gary said if you start shooting raw you will definitely appreciate the larger cards. Congrats on the new camera. They are a lot of fun.

Okay, since it will be better to upgrade the firmware, how do I do that?

No worries, just follow the instructions, they are quite straightforward.
