Lots of good advice. After doing some thinking and well um, budgeting. Quickly realized that well this advice is probably the best for me.

Buy the camera with the kit lens, bag, UV filter, memory card, and nothing else.
That and probably the ultrapod and remote because I've already been told that I'm taking over camera duties at family functions.

It'll get me started and get a good feel for what exactly I'll be doing, where I'm going and what equipment I'll need. Who knows, I could end up hating stoping hiking to take pictures but love going down the street and take random ones.

Doubt that happens but still. And a bit down the road my budget will and could be substantially larger. When that happens, I'll definitely be coming back to this thread.
