ist Ds "bang" now deadish..

Hello all,

I have been a long time Pentax user and I have had this ist ds for about 3 years. Saturday while I was photographing my son's prom I had my camera make a "bang" sound (Well it really sounded like the flash going off even though I wasn't taking a picture and the flash was down) that was loud enough for my wife to hear and then the camera went dead. No display, nothing.

I removed the batteries and waited a bit, put the batteries back in and now I can take pics BUT:

The camera will not turn off,
If I pop the flash up the camera freezes and has to have the batteries taken out

Please oh gurus of DSLR's, tell me that I can push a button and make it all better!

Thanks,
Lester

Capacitors may go boom when they kick the bucket. And it may be the flash capacitor which just did because the thing freezes when you pop the flash. Perhaps one could try to replace those caps with some service manual.

What type of flash were you using? Old TTL flashes are known to cause intermittent problems due to trigger voltage fluctuations.

Its time for you to get another camera after the "big bang", repair for such damage will be expensive.

Capacitor repairs for a Ds might not be all that easy to get done anymore concidering it's as old as it is. I would suggest you concider a K-m, or maybe get hold of a used K100D or something like that.

Yes, push this K-7 preorder button

Seriously, a K2000/K-m shopped at a good price (European price (Pentax Premium dealer) right now is USD 415 w/o VAT for the 18-55 kit -- Adorama is USD 480) may be cheaper than to repair it. And in the same package (same size) of a DS, you get SR, better IQ and better AF.

Otherwise, you may be able to buy a used ~K100D (or even istDS) for half of this if you are lucky.

A repair is most likely not an option.

PS
I've seen that an istDL marked "defect" was sold for $100 at ebay...

Any electronic device that goes bang isn't a good sign. As others have mentioned, it may cost close to a new camera price to get it fixed. I have never had any repair done on any camera that cost under 200 bucks with the shipping included. Your camera does still work somewhat which is a plus. Perhaps if you contact Pentax service and describe what happened they may be able to give you a rough estimate of repair costs and you could decide from that whether to replace or fix it.
