I like putting mine next to the 6x7 and K2 and K200d.

I really rather just have the 6x7. Depth of field control surpassed only by a view camera (or T&S lens).


Also, by the looks of things, Pentax will bring back the old strap lug style after 19 years.

The 110 was my first camera. I would have thought I had died and gone to heaven if I had a 6x7 in junior high.

Being somewhat of a snit, I must state that the first four lenses in the top row are not Pentaxes, they are Asahiflexes. The first Pentax manufactured was the 1957 version, the first shown with a prism on top. Pentax was derived from "Pentaprism + Asahiflex". My first Pentax was this exact model from the first series. The next camera with a prism finder differed from my original only in the shutter speed sequence which was changed to the present 1/30, 1/60, 1/125 etc. The original was 1, 1/2, 1/5, 1/10, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/200, 1/500. The dial on the front is the low speed dial, and included a setting that I would really like to have again: T. Push shutter release once to open, stays open until pressed again. The top dial had B. 1 sec through 1/25 and T on the front. 1/25 was orange, and was the setting used to "transfer" funciton to the top dial, which also had a 1/25 setting to "transfer" it back along with B, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100 and 1/500. I cannot remember what happened if neither was on 1/25. Probably nothing.

Why would Asahi use another brand to compound a name? My definition is straight from my 1968 book. Penta from the prism, x from Ashahiflex. Contax is a completely different company. You've been smoking too many funny cigarettes.

It is said that Zeiss sold Asahi the idea for the name.

There is some confusion about the etymology of the name. Some sources claim it was licensed from VEB Zeiss Ikon, and derived from the combination "PENTAprism" and "contaX". The explanation on pentax.com does not mention Contax or Zeiss Ikon, and states that the name was formed from "PENTAprism" and "refleX", being the reflex mirror of an SLR camera. A third variation substitutes "Asahiflex" for "reflex", which is at least logical as the Asahiflex cameras had waist-level viewfinders and therefore the pentaprism of the Asahi Pentax would have been a significant differentiating feature.

It's fun to see the 110 in there, like a fruit fly on a wasp-infested wall.

Tiny. I didn't examine it that closely. I was shocked to actually see one.

Relative to the lenses, it is actually good. It is a lot like an SV but with an led indicator. The 70mm lens that Pentax made for this camera is one of the better lenses.

Edit: Show me another interchangeable lens SLR that you can do this with.

With the exception of South Africa, they have been known as Pentax since 1957. Asahi wasn't used in the U.S. for a long time. Honeywell was on Pentax cameras. In other words, Pentax had the name recognition more so than Asahi Optical Company. One just didn't say, "I'm going down to the camera shop and buy me a Asahi Pentax Spot F" in the U.S.


Edit: "Pentax" was one of the names the Nippon Optical Corporation cycled through when searching for a name for their new camera in 1948, but ended up calling it the "Nikon" instead.
