flashes for K20D

Hi, I have a 500FTZ. Can this be used on the K20D at all, or do you need the newer FGZ series flashes? thanks

I believe the 500FTZ does not support P-TTL. Also, it does not have its own light sensor and thus does not support flash-auto mode.

It does, however, has variable manual output. So you can use it with the current batch of Pentax DSLRs. You will need to adjust the power output on the flash, and the ISO/aperture settings on the camera depending on the distance to the subject (shutter speed at X, 1/180 or lower). It's a bit clumsy, but doable.

For the next flash you buy, don't buy a flash without its own light sensor.

I can confirm that the AF500FTZ does not support p-TTL. I also confirm that it does not do Auto Flash using an in built sensor. It does do manual at assorted settings, and the zoom can be set manually to the focal length in use. I sold mine, and bought an AF540FGZ. I can do manual flash, but I don't want to any more.

Thanks for the info. I will never get rid of my 500ftz, as it's still quite useful with my film cameras. I will have to see if the price warrants me spending for the 540. Ritz is going out of business in a lot of locations, and I think flashes are down to 50% off right now. If they go to 60-70% I'll probably grab the 540.

I very seldom use flash, and my wife never uses flash, so the AF540FGZ will cover all my flash needs. The MZ-S can use it, as can the SF-1. That's why I sold off the 500 FTZ to get a few dollars to reduce the expense of the 540 FGZ.

That's my dilemma. Do I use flash enough to spend the money on one specifically for my K20 only. My 500ftz and Vivitar work on pretty much all my bodies, so buying one for one is a tough expense.

Users who have been shopping for the AF360FGZ and the AF540FGZ at the various Ritz locations that are closing, have reported buying these flash units for $128 and $208 respectively.... quite a bargain.

If you can find it!

I tried my local Ritz to be shut down and all they had was the 200ftz!

Walked away with a K100D Super, howerver!

BTW according to the lady behind the counter, they are going to close 400 out of 800 stores and should be back on track by September.

At the locations near me, I believe the flashes are at 50%, but that will probably change this weekend. I have about 8 locations within a 40 mile radius of me, so I will have to do some calling to see which one may still have a 540. What is left at a lot of the locations I've visited this week are tons of Pentax accessories. Lots of battery grips, rechargeable batteries, remote shutter releases, and A/C chargers. Camera bags are 60% off, but no Pentax ones to be found anywhere. Lots of Olympus and Nikon ones left.

The lady at my Ritz also said Nikon has stopped shipping cameras to them untill this reorganization is complete.
