That's not photography - that's a drag race. Good luck anyway!

I think you should have held out for an ASA 100 test. If you're gonna do high ASA where the D300 has an edge, then you ought to do as low as possible, too. Then, dunk 'em both in water.
Shoot them both into space for a day. Take them both to Antarctica for a week. Run them both under the tap. Attach a 50/1.2 lens. Set to ISO100.

See which one turns on. That is the winner.

If they both turn on, pick the best shot.

If they both take a decent shot, see which one costs $1000 and which one $3000. The cheaper is the winner.

Any guesses?

That's the real decider there! K20D w/16-50 f2.8 & 50-135 f2.8 vs D300 w/no lens.

So in an image test how will the K20d fare against a D300?

I will be using my FA 50 and my FA43mm Ltd. for the test.
The D300 will fare better if the test is biased towards overall responsiveness. It really does make the K20 look like a slug.
If your comparison must be done with everything set to default, then the D300 files will look punchier and sharper because the D300 defaults are higher than Pentax's.
If this is the way the test will be run, why not just read the DPReview tests? They've already done the work for you.

A fair comparison is when the user gets to optimize the output of the camera, and uses his lens at it's best aperture.
From reading your criteria, it looks like the D300 owner did some research and is setting the criteria to his camera's sweet spot. If he gets to do that, then you should be setting your camera up to it's sweet spot too.

I can save you both a lot of bother.

Imaging Resource "Comparometer" ™ Digital Camera Image Comparison Page

You can compare images all day long. It's interesting to compare the K20D and the supposed canikon best offering and the K10D.

Whoever has a camera will beat whoever does not a camera. Other than that, it's really up to the photographer himself.

The good old camera matters vs camera doesnt matter. Keeps going on forever, well no view is wrong because it depends on how you define it. Altho the price for double standards goes to the camera doesnt matter side, since just about all of them refuse to sell their slrs and use mobile phone cameras instead.

I remember one time my brother (a Pentax fan too, of course) got down and dirty with a Nikon user... Pentax the Hyundai of the Photography world? Well, Canikon are the Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera of the Photography world... Pentax is Radiohead (his words, not mine)...

Hyundais are good, quality, reliable cars with excellent value for your money. I don't take the "Pentax = Hyundai" argument as derogatory at all. I find it apt.

Yea, you should have reminded her.

Pentax = Hyundai, one has the car of the year and the other camera of the year.

If by that statement, he means "innovative quality and long-term value for the price" then, yes they can be compared.

Go figure, I switched from Canon to Pentax and Subaru to Hyundai in the same year... 2008. (30D to K20D, and Outback to Santa Fe) They're all good, but why pay more for less?

Now, I only buy Apple computers, but that's the BMW of computers...
