Does your faulty K20D fall within the returns period?
If so, you'd do well to get a refund and buy another one - or go with the K-7 if you can wait a while!

I don't get this situation. When you buy it from an online vendor they always have an immediate return policy for defective product. With some companies, its 6 days, 7 days, or 30 days. One always wants to immediately ascertain whether its functioning, and if not zoom it back to the vendor. By the way, one of the first things i check with any online store is its reseller rating and also its defective return policy. Haven't had to use it on my last 2 cameras or lenses, but its always good to know what your options are.

I bought a K20D 2 weeks ago from Beach Camera, they have a 30 day return policy on defective stuff. Don't follow the Pentax advice to return it for warranty repairs if its still within this defective return window.

My new K20 is performing flawlessly by the way. Sorry this happened to your friend, thats rough!!!

Right, and Ash said the same as will I. RMA it to Buydig, maybe even overnight or 2nd day it to BuyDig and keep on the phone with them. It should be a fast, simple return.

Follow-up, resolved.

Hey all,

I had posted an update a few days ago, but for some reason it didn't go through -- maybe I accidentally hit cancel.

Anyway, just to clarify, the vendor (BuyDig) was originally not able to issue a direct replacement because it was a K20D kit purchase, not just a body. BuyDig ran out of the kits after my friend's purchase and only had bodies. After explaining the situation to them, they handled it and sent out a replacement body.

For the people wondering why the camera wasn't tested, actually it was. The first pictures came out scrambled (like the one I posted) but my friend and I assumed it was the card reader or firmware error. Once we used the camera to transfer data and updated the firmware, everything seemed fine. It wasn't until there was some prolonged usage that the problems showed up.

The complicating factor is my friend was sent on an Asia trip with next to no advanced notice and happened to received the camera right before leaving on the work trip. His vacation trip and business trip left him with a gap of 3 days to resolve this bizarre problem, which is not something anyone could have foreseen.

I appreciated everyone's feedback and suggestions, this forum is great!
