The great thing about letting other people see your mistakes is that it sends you on a steep learning curve. Thanks to everyone for your help and comments, I've learned a lot from you (and dug the manual out!). I'd even got the bird wrong, its a Great Tit, not a Blue Tit. With some help I've got a different version of the same shot...

Love this, and thanks for sharing it... That's the kind of shot I want to take.

I've just checked my settings on the camera and the sharpness/noise settings were all factory default. I did mess about with them when I first got the camera in January, but have since learned that if I shoot in RAW it's a wasted effort.
