Why? What did they do to offend you?

Panasonic / Olympus

the more I shoot street the more I have this itch. only problem is the tiny viewfinder

also one day when I will shoot enough and gain enough experience to call myself a photographer I will get a leica

the rest doesn't give me anything that my Pentax doesn't give me

I answered Nikon & Olympus. But I'd miss SR & the Pentax ergonomics with the former, and I think the smallish 4/3 sensor's high-ISO would bug me with the latter.

I dislike the Canon ergonomics, and can't seem to get used to them (a friend has an EOS 40D that I use from time to time).

Sony would probably be the best match, but I have a general dislike for the brand (not restricted to cameras) and generally avoid buying their products.

Fuji is quite likely out of the DSLR market by now.

Sigma has no appeal to me, high ISO IQ is lagging behind everyone else (Foveon sensor limitation).

Panasonic's products have not impressed me so far, but the G1 & GH1 may change that in the future.

The cheap plastic Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel I had no interest in. They aren't weather proof but they probably float.
My thoughts exactly on the Sony A200 and Canon Rebel, not so much for the Nikon D40 tho.

My first pick after Pentax will be a Fuji, the S5 pro to be specific, because this is the camera that get me hooked on colours and dynamic range that couldn't be done in a P&S. Ended up getting the K200d after tons of research.

Second choice after the Fuji will be the Nikon D80/D90.

Atfter play around with many demos I still can't get used to the control and ergonomics of Canon (Rebels to 40D/50D alike) and the Sony alphas. Oly has very tiny viewfinders so they are out of the question as well.

I'm not surprised most people would get Nikon or Canon if Pentax went belly up. But I am curious why so many would get Sony ?

I am guessing because Sony isn't Canon or Nikon. There'll always be people who don't want to do the popular thing.

Olympus. I've used several olys (mixed with most other brands) over the last 20 years. I just bought my first OLYmpus DSLR (E-500). The only BAD thing so far is the TINY VF. The pics in JPEG, in SHQ, 1/2.7 compression, are around 5.5 megs and look very fine to my old eyes. But I think that the never satisfied camera-thing in me is looking at the future and maybe a K-7.

I've had difficulty with Sony products in the past.
As I haven't had good luck with the brand..I stay away from it.

Yeap. Other than Pentax, Sony is the only brand making APS-C cameras with in-body image stabilization, so in this regard it is the closest. Also, there are two nice tricks that as far as I know only work in Pentax and Sony/Minolta DSLRs:

1. HyperProgram ("Ps/Pa" in Minolta talk). The Pentax Z1 and Minolta 7xi were both released with this this feature around the same time. Both companies kept this feature ever since, at least in the high end cameras.
2. Manual shift using the AE-L button. I don't recall when was this feature first introduced, but it's been there for a long time.

I guess great minds really do think alike. Too bad there's not much of "the mind of Minolta" left in Sony.

I'd have to go Canon, because that puts the 1D in my possible upgrade path
