There is a lively discussion about this going on at dpreview. It does not appear that firmware has any effect on sensor function. The sensor is what it is. For people shooting in RAW, firmware and in-camera software do not matter.

Sony A700 is one example where firmware has major impact on noise in RAW files.

Except in this case, Sony did not improve the IQ of the raw files. They stopped applying NR to them (which means they weren't really "raw" to begin with).

The level and type of NR affects image quality, so regardless of how you prefer to phrase this, firmware can affect image quality of RAW files.

It's too early to tell what NR Pentax is going to apply to RAW files, if at all. We'll have to wait for the final firmware.

Agreed. Too much has been made of the pre-production samples already.
