The jpegs are not overly impressive when ISO goes up and I would have loved to download the raws you posted but since they are in .pef format, there are no raw converter to accept them...

Why didn't you use .dng format instead?

PEF is useable in google (picasa), lightroom, and the pentax photo browser (downloadable from pentax?)

Thanks

Steve

PEF also opens fine in UFRaw. But not RawTherapee

Appears to be better controlled chroma noise in the dark 3200 ISO shot compared to my K20D.

For what it's worth, the PEF files on the site don't load in photoshop or lightroom (2.3), it says they are damaged or unrecognized.

I converted one with dcraw though, and the difference is as you would expect. More grain, less jpeg in-camera-anti-noise vomit.

I find the noise realy beutifull, film like. And usable pictures at iso 6400, now to see how those high iso works with longer shutter speed

Wow I'm quite impressed, comparing it to my experience with my K20D.

Yes, the downloaded PEF file from K-7 on this site can not be viewed both in Lightroom 2.3 nor Adobe Bridge CS3.

But, the picture with ISO 1600 looks promising to me.

None of the high ISO pictures seams to be shot in really poor lightning. So if you are after to use high ISO to get short shutter times, it looks great, but usually the cameras struggle a lot more if there actually is not much ligting around.

Having said that I regularly manage decent to good pictures with my K20 on ISO 1600 or 2200 at 1/4 F2.8, and I would expect the K-7 to be at least as good.

Those high ISO Jpegs actually look nice. the video looks bad though. Not Hi-def at all.

The ISO3200 shot is in a dark tunnel with a lit sign. Bad lighting there.

There were explicit instructions from Japan that came with the pre-production samples that they were not to be used at any sensitivity settings over 1600. They stated the image quality was far from final. Either this message did not get passed on, or it was ignored.

Well John, these guys might have done Pentax a favour. Looking at that tunnel photo at ISO 3200 shot in JPEG makes me smile. If that's what the sensor can do with 0.3 firmware and direct JPEG, I can't wait to see what it'll do with v.1.0 and RAW.

Good times for Pentax, John, good times

Looks like someone's going to be hearing from Pentax...

Personally, not that impressed with the high ISO JPG samples. The NR seems to be so heavy that the resolution is seriously degraded. Then again, it seems comparable to the D300...

Anyway, this isn't going to make me have second thoughts about the K-7.
