What's the difference between the K100D, Super, and K110D?

What's the difference between the K100D, Super, and K110D?

How well would one do as a back-up camera to my K20D?

K110D = K100D without SR
K100D Super = K100D with SDM compatibility and some tweaks (better SR from K10D).

They are all 6mpix so a bit difference from 14.6 of the k20d. The km has imo better AF than k20d, altho fewer points, and 10mp instead of 6.

k100d, k100d super, and k110d?

and do you say that k110d doesn't have a SR?

I've got the K100D Super and it's a great camera.

The K110D does not offer SR. The K100D Super is an upgraded K100D.

The K100D Super IMO is the best of all three.

K110D<K100D (adds SR to K110D features) <K100D Super (adds SDM support to K100D features).

They all use the same sensor so the image quality should be about the same, you just lose features as you go down the line.

The K100D Super also offers sensor-shake dust cleaning.

I started with a K110D and recently got a K20D. The biggest thing you'll notice immediately switching between them is how excruciatingly slow the K110D is (and I assume the others as well, but don't know for sure) compared to the K20D. If you only take set composed shots, it won't matter, but any kind of rapid shooting is going to have you standing there waiting for a few seconds saying, "Ok hold on". If you're just looking for a cheap back up, the 1xx series may be too big of a step back from the K20D for you to be happy, and the prices really start compacting on the low end of the scale. There's only around a hundred bucks difference between the K110D, K10D, and K200D, when you can find them, or on Ebay.

One small advantage to K100D or K110D as a true back-up--if you use DA* dual-AF (screw-driven & SDM) lenses, if the SDM fails on the lens, you can still get autofocus via the screw-driven method. If you're using a 'Super', it probably won't revert to screw-driven either with an SDM lens mounted. IMO, Pentax should have provided a custom setting to disable SDM. On the other hand, if you want to use an SDM-only (KAF3 mount) lens like DA 17-70/4, then you get no autofocus with these older bodies, so pick your poison.

Performance-wise, these bodies are really close and controls are identical. For that matter, the *ist series are quite similar as well and some of these offer distinct advantages. For one, they're slightly smaller and lighter. The D, DS, and DS2 have a pentaprism viewfinder pretty much indistinguishable from your K20D. They also support classic TTL flash. The biggest loss is SR. JPEG processing is a little more primitive. No digital preview. The *ist D has a twin e-dial control layout more like your K20D but has some other drawbacks like uses CF memory, small LCD, and is one of the slowest bodies.

A back up for what?

For low light / high ISO they are good choices from what I've read.

The K-m has the same 10 mpix sensor as the K10D. A better choice if you crop a lot.

Luis

I would say of the three, the k100d super is the best by virtue of sdm support, if nothing else.

Agreed. While the K20D is certainly impressive for a 14mp camera, more MP = more noise. My K20D simply cannot match my K100DS at 1600/3200 iso under low light. Under really dark conditions my K100DS + F50 1.7 makes fantastic combination.

EDIT: I just some tests under daylight conditions (well mostly overcast really) and if you properly expose, then the K20D really shines as I am hard pressed to see a difference between the two aside from slight WB differences. The K100 might have slightly more chroma noise while the K20 a bit more luminance noise.
