K100D flash sync speed

I know that Pentax says the maximum shutter speed that you can use with a flash is 1/180th of a second but I was wondering how much higer you can actually go than this? From what Ive found out, most of the manufactuers maximum x-sync speed is usally conservative. For example the d50 syncs at 1/500 but i know lots of people who shoot at 1/1000 with no problems what so ever. Is this the same with the Pentax? (not nessecarily 1/1000 but can it go any higher than 1/180)

Thanks guys,

Tyler

My old Nissin hot shoe auto thyristor flash doesn't fire if I set the shutter speed higher than 1/180s. It's like a brick wall, no way through. High speed sync is possible though with new Pentax flashes and the Sigma EF-500 Super.
