Hi Frank,

I might have missed the post, but can you share your feelings about the new strap lugs? I wonder about those...

Thanks!

It's pretty good. Can't say it's better than previous ones, just different. I do feel the left side of the shoulder strap might touch the mode dial too easily when I hang the strap on the neck or shoulder, probably nothing to worry about.

Wow, Frank. Your ISO 3200 shot looks a lot better than others I've seen, even in the dark areas. The noise isn't as squirrely as in other sample shots by Unlocker and falconeye. I wonder what caused the difference? Are these 100% crops or resized?
QuoteOriginally posted by frank Quote
Those original ones are 100% crops, untouched except ACR conversion. You can check the file size
Hmmh, files sizes are almost exactly 50% of originals. The noise looks like that in 50% resizes too (resizing to 50% gains you excatly one ISO stop, so ISO3200 would now look like 1600, exactly what I see).

Sorry, I made a mistake when uploading those files. Somehow photobucket resized all the original files to max at 1mb size

Since I've got v1.0 firmware installed, I'll do the same test again tonight and post results tomorrow.

Glad to hear that you've got v1.0 firmware installed.
Can't wait to see more test results.
Thank you very much for your time on this.

Noooo! Hopes dashed to the rocks again. Curse you, Frank!!!

That level of improvement was too much to hope for I guess. My eyes saw and the part of me that wanted to believe did. Looking forward to the new samples with v1 firmware.

Okay, I've reloaded all those files, now they are all original size directly from DNG converted by ACS.

I'm checking on some new photos taken after I upgraded to new v1.0 firmware right now. Will upload them when they are ready

Thanks for those, Frank. Back down to earth for me regarding ISO 3200.

But I'm also confused by what I'm seeing. I don't have a means of doing quantitative analysis of noise, so I'm just going by the visual quality of it. The progression of noise from one ISO setting to the next doesn't make sense to me:

- 400 to 800 looks like a normal progression.

- 800 to 1600 looks as if noise reduction kicks in. 1600 shows the typical smudgy signature of noise reduction, and in terms of noise amount might be similar to 800 although detail has gone down.

- 1600 to 3200 looks like they say "screw it" and turn off noise reduction. The 3200 noise is so much sharper and digital looking than at 1600, and there's so much more of it. Does it really jump that much from 1600 to 3200?

So yeah, I'm not sure what to think anymore except that 3200 is still not good for me. Apparently I'm bad about expecting too much from new products though, so I'll leave further comments to those with more realistic expectations unless I see something that changes my view of ISO 3200 noise.

I think because it's still a beta test version, I couldn't see any difference at all between results w/ NR set ON or OFF. But w/ the new firmware v1.0, I can see the difference from the JPG results. RAW files are not affected by NR settings. I'm uploading samples now, will link them over when it's done.

Did some high ISO testing again after I upgraded the firmware to v1.0. Same setup: K-7 w/ FA31 mounted on tripod, 2 sec mirror up. Someone said the scene wasn't dark enough in the previous test, so I changed a bit, only left one light on (I left two lights on in the prevous test). Here are a set of photos taken w/ NR set OFF, all from RAW (DNG) file converted by ACR (w/ default setting) to JPG, save in quality of 10 , except the ISO6400 ones which were saved at quality of 8 due to the bigger file size (over 5mb if saved above quality of 8, my photobucket account has a file size limite of 5mb).

K-7 has three level of NR (noise removal) setting, user can choose to disable it, or set it to low, medium or high. User has option to start NR at ISO200, 400, 800 or 1600. Of course NR only works on JPG output, it doesn't affect RAW files.

Here I only tested ISO800 and above, to see how effective the NR works at different settings. All are straight out of camera in JPG, resaved to quality of 10 to reduce file sizes.

You can see the inbody NR is pretty effective on JPG output.

ISO800 NR set to OFF:

Here are a set of quick testing shots I took last night, just walked around our block, and also took some photos in my friend's home. All taken handheld w/ K-7 and FA31 (except the last one which was taken w/ my friend's DFA100/2.8 macro) in RAW (DNG) then converted by ACR at default setting. No further post process done. You can download the original converted JPG files if you like to see the details.

Since these are all converted from RAW files, there are no noise reduction done on these unless ACR did something in default setting.

Well. Frank, They look great to me.

The 3200 could have been better, but I saw you were using very low shutter speeds.
Thank you. But I think you are very satisfied with yourself anyway.

BTW. Your sensor has a defect, a small streak going from top to bottom of the sensor , around the middle.

EDIT:::

I re-read my post, It does not sound gratifying enough

Thank you again and may you get the K-8 when it comes out .
