I can get the K20 with the SMC P-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II kit lens for $990 AUD ($880 US).
This seems to be about $200 more than the current prices in the U.S. that have been mentioned here. If the price comes down in Oz to that level it will be very tempting to pick up a K20 with perhaps a better lens.

That seems to be the way it works out for me.

That's a tough one - I'm not sure Oz prices will come as far down as the US ones at any stage. Why not pick one up from B&H or Adorama if you want one new, or pick up one of the many K20Ds that crop up on the forum marketplace for an even better price?

If I do go with the K20 what lens should I get? It comes with the 18-55 kit lens but I was thinking about the DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL. Will still be cheaper than the K7 I would imagine.

Wouldnt it be better to wait for the new WR lenses? thats what im planning to do, scouting the markets for good prices on body only´s atm.
Pentax SMC-DA 18-55/3,5-5,6 AL WR (2100kr, 257$ us) and
Pentax SMC-DA 50-200/4,0-5,6 ED WR (2900kr, 355$ us) seem reasonably priced.

Will there be a big difference in img quality between the 16-45mm and the new 18-55mm?
Why is the 16-45mm almost twice as expensive?
What should i pay for a good condition used k20? in terms of % of original price..

thx

I'm actually selling up some of my (non camera gear) stuff to buy a DA 16-45 f/4 and when I get my tax return; get the K20d. It's fits my needs and the K-7 is a little to expensive for me now.

Glass is more important then the body anyway, so that combination will serve you better as I dont imagine the kit lens on the K-7 to be, as good as the 16-45.

IMO, I disagree with going for the 18-55, WR or not, if one is looking for a decent wide zoom to match a very decent camera body.

The 18-55, whilst a great kit lens, does not do the K20D justice with regards to IQ. There is a marked improvement in all aspects of IQ with the 16-45, certainly worth the price increase. The apparent improvement from the 16-45 to the DA* 16-50 is not as obvious, though the 16-50 is weather-sealed, an f/2.8 and has SDM AF. This said the 16-50 is again double the price of a 16-45.

So if one is asking if the 16-45 is worth the price compared with the 18-55, the answer is a resounding yes.

Get a loan or splurge but you must get the K7 or you will live with a cloud above your head.... you"ve got heaps of beautiful country there to take pics of. My sis in law and family live there. They don"t call it "Fridgetown" for nothing eh???

(I posted similarly on photo.net)

At the moment i have a lot of mixed gear and a lot i dont use any or very very little, i've been thinking of selling all extra and accesories to raise funds for some gear.
I think to (maybe?) keep my Pentax K200D with the Katzeye screen as a reserve and still get the new K-7 which seems to be a nice camera.
I though about getting the K20 earlier, but the K-7 is a little smaller and i like the better design of it and of course, why get something else when you can get the newer version instead (will probably sell a Metz 15 MS-1 ringflash and some lenses, like the 14mm, some takumars and for the K-7 to get one 55/1.4 and a regular flash)? Allready have the 50-135/28 Pentax, but I'd like to get the older 80-200/2.8 instead.

This might be some off-topic, but i'll write it anyway...
Not totally sure whether to sell or keep my Leica M6 (+ the 50/2 Dual-range with gogles and shade, a summar 50/2) instead for (when getting my pre-ordered one) Olympus E-P1 with the 17mm and finder. Also have some other fixed lens rangefinders that i might sell..

Whats your ideas?

Yeah it's bloody cold here at the moment! Thanks for all your input...much appreciated although it isnt making the decision any easier!
At the end of the day (if money is an issue of course) it would seem to me that it would be better to have a good body (K20) with very good glass than a K7 with average glass? Although I do have a Sigma 10-20 which is a fantastic lens. When I get to hanlde both cameras in a store I think the decision will be made with my heart and not my head!

Well, perhaps Pentax is trying to tell us something with this new model-- flip the "K7" upside down and it vaguely resembles "LX"

I'd really agree there: even a nice, WR kit lens is still a kit lens.

It's looking like the K-7 is going to be a lovely piece if you have the means, but if you go with a K20d and some nicer glass, there's still the potential to upgrade later. It's not an unhappy choice to make, I think. I like primes, anyway, and there's always the older glass, if you go with the K-7.

Good news! (for me anyway) Due to an unexpected windfall I can now afford the K7 so will be definately getting it asap! Now the next vexing question id which lens? The WR kit lens or the 16-45? Any other options worth considering?

Don't dismiss the new DA 18-55mm WR. The image quality is good, certainly better than the original DA 18-55mm. You will be pleasantly surprised by the build quality. I do think it is a worthwhile lens to get.
