I guess they think that the DA*'s fit this criteria, and in introducing the K-7, they said it was in a category Pentax had never tried to compete in before. Is their timing great? No. Six months ago you could not have bought a K20D for what it costs today, and in Canada at least, the DA Limited's price has come back down after a dramatic rise. You can get a DA 35mm macro and a K20D for just over $1,000 Canadian dollars. Go second hand and you can get another lens too.
The K-7 is a 'Limited' body. I would not be surprised to see a 'DA*' body next which, if it happens, is going to make some people nostalgic of the time when the K-7 was so cheap. It seems as though Pentax is raising prices where the risk of inflation is greatest. If you are prepared to buy anywhere in the world, you will probably get better deals.
