Battle of the Sounds K20D vs. K-7

I recently made a sound comparison between the K20D and the K-7.

Enjoy the 5.2 Fps!

Both Cams with 1/500 f6.3 and 18-55 AL WR
Freefield Recording, 50cm distance.

K-7 shutter sound is loveeee. <3

The K20D doesn't sound bad either. It's somewhat similar to K100D. One of my main gripes with Pentax other than AF is the loud mirror slap. It sounds more substantial than my friend's D40x (which sounds plasticky, but way more silent) but it definitely isn't one that goes unnoticed in an enclosed room.

Outdoors I couldn't care less though, just indoor I have a problem trying to shoot people with it in a ninja fashion.

Like a V8 vs. a V6...
Though my V6 is serving me well...
Thanks for sharing this.

The Changes are even more obvious, if you look at the waveforms:

No worries about the time scale; it's not necessary. I haven't heard the K-7 sounds, but that looks like a worthy improvement.

The quieter shutter alone is almost enough to cause me to purchase a K-7. I recently attended a community theater production in which two of my grandchildren appeared, and was very self-conscious of the loud ker-thunk my K10D made each time I snapped the shutter. It was loud enough to turn a head or two.

thank you sixstring.

When you did the tests, did you focus exactly on the same subject using the same focus point ? What kind of lightning was there ? If so we see here how much faster is the af of the K7.

Would be interesting to see more tests like this from K7 vs K20D and maybe older pentax cameras (K10D, K100D) in diffrent lightning conditions so we can see the Af difference. Maybe some other beta testers can also do this with different lenses ? Falconeye, Frank ?

Per the amplitude plots, the shutter is certainly quieter, but the AF is louder on the K7. It also has a different frequency peak (if you're feeling sassy, do you have a freq analyzer ). To my ear the AF on the K-7 is much more obtrusive due to what sounds like a bump around 2-4Khz.

Oh well...there's always SDM. Except on ltd primes.

you can't upload mp3 files, if i'm not mistaking?!

Illumitation was "normal" Daylight indoor, two windows, 20m^2 room size about 20°C, light breeze by northeast, two birds were flying by the window, my green car was parked in front of my house.

Focus aim was the tip of the mic. always focusing from ∞ to ca 50cm

Judging by the reports that it's also substantially faster, perhaps that's the price we pay for a more powerful motor.
