No sorry, I have no experience with either program. Windows was banned from my usage in 1994 when I went OS/2. I have been running linux since 1998. But I can say that if anybody is looking for a reason to shoot in raw rather than jpeg, the improvement in denoising over the past several years is one good reason. I love revisiting old photos that I thought were doomed only to be overjoyed by much better results with the new software.

HAHA!
I used to run OS/2 also(back in the day).
I actually quite enjoyed it when IBM had it into development.
Unfortunately... it didn't get much software support and the OS become more of a novelty than an OS.

Other than that, I always liked Linux, but since applications lead the way in many cases, most of us haven't had the luxury of using it as a primary OS.

Today I get to run OSX in vmware and play with some of my favorite RAW converters and tools. But that's about as daring as I get with respect to the linux kernel

I agree with recent RAW developments too!
I'm really glad we persisted over the years with RAW for that very reason.

I presume you mean "wavelet". The following plugin, maybe ? Wavelet denoise | GIMP Plugin Registry

That's the one I use, and I really like the results. I generally just blur the heck out of the Cb and Cr channel, and leave Y alone.
Is it wavelet? I always called it wavelight for whatever reason.

how many of you guys use Linux systems? I had used Ubuntu in the past, which was great IMO.

I keep a few Linux flavors in vM's for quick and dirty jobs.
I used to dual boot a few distro's in the past, but I gave it up in favor of VM's(virtual machines). Especially with SSD and multicore systems in the mix. It only makes sense to run VM's over committed data installations.

My latest addiction is running a Dual core, 2GB, 20GB SSD MacOSX VM.
It's actually quite nimble at 1920 x 1200 resolution and I get to use Raw Photo Processor with my DNG's which is well worth the efforts.
And since the VM is nativally networked to the host machine, I can access and work with files through the network without any fuss. Which is really great.

Here are a few from a Merle Haggard show I went to on father's day this year.

K10D, ISO 1600(1250 on the last one and it seems as though I turned off the SR for some reason for that one), 135mm f/2.5 @ either 2.5 or 4, I don't remember. No post processing, but they have all been decreased in size for photobucket.

Another first...

Not my picture(thanks: dgaies), but since it marks the first official ISO51200, RAW/DNG render, I thought I would go ahead and post the shot for the record

PROCESSED: ISO51200, RAW/DNG

(K-5, ISO51200, 77mm, f/8, 1/125s)

I look forward to adding more just as soon as we can get a hold a some K-5's in our area

New K-5 ISO51200 sample:

Just received a new DNG/RAW from dgaies which was shot with high ISO in mind.
And the results are more than pleasing. PP was much easier than with the earlier samples and it even looks like we might be able to squeeze a little more out of it also.

K-5, ISO51200, f/8, 1/250s

Yup. Father's day show at the Casino in Lincoln City. My folks live there and my step mother was cool enough to get my father and I tickets for father's day.

A final K-5 nugget then I'm done...

Well this is it!

Thanks to dgaies' ongoing determination and willingness to help, we have finally managed to fully explore the K-5's low light capabilities in a very complete way!

I was told several months by a Pentax employee several months ago that the K-5 would give FF a run for it's money and now I have seen it with my own two eyes.
Here we have an image taken from a K-5 RAW, processed in ACR and a single pass with Topaz Denoise(no laying or masking, no special effects, nothing). Just click, click, save and here it is!

K-5, ISO51200, 1/40s, 85mm, ƒ/5.6 - Click image to view full size

Having seen this, I honestly don't know what else we could throw at the camera to challenge it!

... the end

That's crazy!

Would you mind posting the same image with just the ACR processing and no Topaz Denoise pass?
