And were back...

Well this weekend marked the beginning of my own journey with the new K-5, and so, I started things off with a few primes and an try at some tough shooting conditions. The setting was mostly with high ISO and low ambient, covered by backlighting. which I consider tough shooting for most any camera(FF included).

In this particular set, I setup the camera for ISO6400 and shot with an 85mm at f/2. The scene was illuminated with Incandescent lighting(chandelier) placed at the rear right of the subject to help invoke highlight and shadow recovery in processing.

The file was developed in ACR 6,x and processed with Denoise, FocalBlade and Perfectly Clear. I shot the DNG image at: 1/100s, ISO6400, -1eV(to preserve highlights). And accepted an adjustment of +.65 eV and a +36 brightness from ACR prior to processing. All other ACR settings were at 0 respectively.

So all in all, I am quite satisfied with the K-5's DR capacity in these condition. And though I think there is room for improvements in PP(slight magenta cast). I think things are looking very good on the overall potential side of things.

K-5, ISO6400, 1/100s, 85mm f/2, DNG, NR:OFF

PS. I used AFC w/FPS priority(no assist lamp) and focus was spot on in this test.

I posted these in another thread - but thought it was appropriate here -

May seem strange - but neither of these were my picks -
but were singled out by the bass player of this band -

Pentax K-x

ISO5000, f/3.5, 1/40, 18mm -
yes, a really dark jazz club, and yes, the humble 18-55 Mk1 kit zoom wide-open.....

ISO5000, f/4.5, 1/40, 68mm - 50-200 kit zoom wide-open.
this has the EXIF re-attached (caveat - PhotoBucket can mysteriously drop metadata)

Some photos from the Godspeed You! Black Emperor concert on 3/22, all shot with my k-x. Note: I did use a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom on a few of these :\

Some of these shots are amazing to me as the small sensor camera I have been using falls apart above iso 200 when a lot of these were taken at the equivalent of four to five stops higher. This really helps make up for the small armature of the zooms that are now popular and affordable.Noise is what is what has got me to finally get into a dslr,a Pentax of course so I can use my old k lens.

This is a shot I took on a recent photo shoot when I intentionally wanted some graininess added to the shot. Shot with a K-7, f/2.8, 1/250 and ISO 6400 using the DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 at 43mm. Lighting was with an Alien Bee 800 gridded.

I'll play.

These are with the K-5, Jpeg ***, High ISO NR OFF, cropped, PP'd with a surprisingly light applications of Topaz Denoise and Topaz InFocus, downsized for the web. I've posted them in a different forum here, but they're on topic.

ISO 10K Sigma EX 180 f3.5 APO DG Macro wide open through glass indoors. The light was mostly supplied by skylights on an overcast day.

ISO 12.8K Pentax DA 18-250 @ 200mm, f6.2 in relatively dim room light

I've found that Natural, with in-camera Sharpening at -4 gives me very good high ISO jpeg results. NR is expected at these crazy ISO sensitivities, and I haven't found anything as good as Topaz DN to smooth out the fine line details, and Topaz InFocus allows deconvolution sharpening without a lot of the artifacts that local contrast enhancement produces.

Had a go at trying out a few ISO 12800-25600 shots with the K-5 under some putrid cool white LED downlighting and these couple came through:

Moderate in-camera NR but no other PP NR or sharpening:

(EXIF intact if interested).

Not bad at all - might be able to use ISO 12800 if exposed well for full-size images at a push...

Very nice indeed!

Have you considered or tried experimented with shooting at the pre NR stages(- ISO2200) vs in camera ISO12.8K?

dgaies and I did some preliminary testing early on but never finished due to monetary issues(inside joke ). But the preliminary results looked promising. Some of my early tests may have reached the 12.8K regions, though I never really got a chance to measure.
