Wow, yeah - ISO 20,000, F1.2, 1/125s...

That's ridiculous!

I love the noise of Pentax cameras more than any other camera. The Nikons are starting to have better noise feel to them, but still.

Some of these extremely high ISO pictures just look fantastic, and perhaps even more so BECAUSE of the noise, in some cases. It's just such a cool grunge effect. I gotta learn to shoot these high ISO shots with the quality that all of you are!

from my experience, the secret seems to be relatively fast shutterspeed
if the same picture was @ iso 10000 and 1/60 it would be almost the same...
but if it was @ iso 20000 and 1/60 instead of 1/125 (which means darker conditions and/or slower lens) the noise would be much worse...
there are other factors too, like the temprature (colder = less noise)
the available light usage, you should use every bit of it (faster lens, subjects position etc)
try it and see for yourself

my guestimate for this photos pp is definitely color nr, some curves and levels, maybe a little bit luminance nr maybe not, it is resized so this helps with the luminance noise a little bit...

the pentax noise is perfect, film like (well sort of), defintely organic, no banding at all, nikons are almost the same, i like their noise, canons on the other hand...

My puppy was a willing model Thanks for inspiring me, all!

K20D, ISO 3200, added B&W and tweaked the sliders just a hair in iPhoto.

Edit: Almost forgot. Was going old school with the picture and the high ISO grunge feel so decided to go old school with my lens selection as well. Pentax M 50mm f/2, set at f/2.0.

1/10th of a second, SR on.

Thanks. I had it set to TAv because the animals were moving around a bit, and slower shutter speeds caused too much blur. I did take some others with a slower shutter speed and a low ISO of 1600-2000 (see below). I actually didn't do NR on this one, believe it or not. I think I just forgot. I was pretty surprised when I saw the ISO20000.

Not really high ISO on a K-5, IMO.

ISO 20,000 is crazy!! I wonder if the K30 can pull that off?

It actually looks pretty good, considering 51,200 is such an absurdly high ISO!

Here is one with the K-30 and Pentax-F/1.7 50mm.
ISO 6400, 1/200, f/2 .

This is San Francisco Civic Center. I shot this in a moving car through the passenger window so it was a bit blurry, but I think it's still a decent shot.
Noise ninja and sharpening done in Aftershot.

A few other from SF taken in august.
All with K-30 and Pentax-F 50mm 1.7 .

All shot from the same car within a 45 minute period - my partner was driving.
ISO is 6400 on most of these, a couple are at 3200, one at 5000 .
Shutter speed between 1/15 and 1/500.

The combo of fast lens + high ISO camera + SR is hard to beat. With most cameras and lenses you would probably need a tripod to take these night shots, but I took them handheld from a moving car . I don't know the car speed for each shot, but I think it was going up to 40 mph at some point. It may have been stopped for some shots also.
I did delete a bunch of shots that were too blurry to be useful, perhaps 30 out of 100.
