Shot last night. K10D, ISO 1600, 0.4 second, f/4.5, hand held:

I don't like the noise in the sky. I rarely shoot over ISO 800 for this reason.

Nice audiobomber. nice to see high ISO 3200 and above, so well done.
Thanks Javier. I used to limit the K20 to ISO 2000, but I can't see any appreciable difference between 2000 and 3200. I'm thinking it's because of how the NR works (more active at higher ISO = similar results). I don't hesitate to use 3200 now.

FWIW, in that picture at that size, I don't see much noise per se - I see fairly extreme posterization, a totally different thing (google the term if you're not familiar). Partially due to JPEG compression, but partially just inherent in certain exposures and certain types of scenes (eg, underexposed skies).

I'm sure there's more noise visible at full size - unavoidable at ISO 1600. Although also relatively easy to control in PP, especially if you shoot RAW. But in any case, just wanted to make sure you weren't seeing the posterization and thinking that was noise.

The first shot is ISO 2260 (ISO 800 set in camera, result was too dark, 1,5 stop added in Lightroom).

Second shot is ISO 3600 (ISO 800 and 2.2 stops added in Lightroom).

Click for bigger.

When I first got my K20D I complained about high iso performance. I am thoroughly impressed now.

Nice shots--glad to hear you are happy with the K20d. I could not be happier with mine, unless it could make breakfast for me too. Best!

I was going to post in another thread, but here are a couple of point and shoot test shots I did in the house tonight at ISO 6400. Nothing special about these, just a demo of high ISO.

I applied a rather heavy amount of NR to my original RAW file in Lightroom before exporting this down-sampled version. Anything bigger and you're fighting the balance between NR, detail and digital noise.

A few using my K10D at 1600 ISO. Both were f/5.6 at 300mm on my Tamron 75-300. Shutter speed was 1/20 and 1/45 respectively, hand held. I was quite pleased with the decent output from my inexpensive Tammy!

K-7: No NR (iso 1600 and 2000)

Only snapshots, but these are straight from the camera, RAW and opened in LR and cropped. EXIF intact. None of these have PP of any kind.

ISO2000

ISO1600

ISO1600

Here is a PAN with NO NR, taken at iso 2000, hand held and stitched. The first image above is part of the pano, so you can see the noise for each frame.
