Pentaxor, are you sure that first shots was at iso3200 with no NR ?, was the jpeg set for high NR ?, even then that is very impressive. I cannot achieve those results without noise reduction, and thus my question. Actually with straight camera jpeg I may not be able to get that clean even at iso 1600 in that setting.

What is the shutter and aperture for that shot?

These shots I took on Saturday at a Jr. high basketball game where my granddaughter was cheerleading. All at ISO 1600 which is all the K10D will do. The noise isn't bad and I find the high ISO shots from this camera as good or better than any high ISO film results I ever had. Not much PP, just a little cropping to remove unwanted stuff around the edges common to bleachers shots.

That's not PF. It's pure stage lighting. It's normal.

Yes, the first jpeg photo was shot at ISO3200 with no NR. I completely disabled all the NR features on the K-7. the only thing that I did was to intentionally overexpose the image then later pulled it down. the idea was to retain as much detail, this would be impossible with NR on since it will blotch up the image or remove some of the minute details of the image. note that this is not a post-processed RAW file.

I only applied a bit of an off-camera NR (film grain type NR) on the 2nd jpeg photo afterwards just as a means of comparison for the 1st photo. the second photo still show a very nice and quite considerable detailed result but doesn't appeal to me as much as the 1st photo. for me, the second photo is just too amazingly clean even with a film grain effect. I prefer the quite dirty look feel of the first one. it gives more emphasis on detail.

shutterspeed is set at 1/160, aperture set at f8.

what really impressed me is the 55-300 lens that I used. I shot this photo at 300mm (450mm equiv.). and you can just see how really good this lens can be. I didn't do any sharpening of any sort btw on and off-camera. sharpness was set to -1. so this might have some effect on the noise output on the jpeg results making them much more tolerable and easier to deal with.

Some thoughts after looking at all posts in this thread. It is obvious that both the K-7 and K20d can be used with no problems up to ISO 1100 and they're still very good at 1600. At ISO 3200 the results are more inconsistent. The K-X seems to be approx 0,5 to 1 stop better.

I believe that's the idea. achieving good to very good images at ISO 3200 on the K20D/K-7 can be quite tricky. sometimes, some people can get frustrated. but if you nail it, the rewards are great.
