I just wanted to post a picture (1 of about 250) that I took a couple of weeks ago at night - a Snowboarding superpipe in Michigan - training for Olympic snowboard teams. This first picture was unprocessed - taken with the "noisy" Pentax K-7 with a 50-200mm WR zoom at 1/160 sec , F5.6. - ISO 6400. The second is after using Noiseware Community edition. This was my first try at highspeed shooting and high ISO shots.

Marc, sorry I missed the shot of your, er, barefoot--but I really am enjoying this very nice shot @ 3200.

Here are some photos made with my K7 and 35mm 2.8 LTD lens at dusk. The first one is ISO 2000, the rest are at ISO 3200. All were shot RAW and produced with Lightroom 3 beta, using a small amount of chroma noise reduction. (Luminance NR is disabled in the LR3 beta, so what you see is what you get here).

To be honest, these show a ton of noise and these are small images. Am I missing something here?

It's the dreaded banding that seems to affect these shots the most.
Its very hard to manage in NR and can be quite prominent on some camera's in contrast to others.
I don't know if the banding is the worst of the issues brought on by the K7 at ISO3200 though.
because color blotching to be fairly prominent as well.
But the banding sure can't help in the end.

For what it's worth, we have two K20's, and one of them has worst banding than the other.
Though the worst of the two has the later firmware, I refuse to upgrade old trusty just in case that it's performance is somehow tied into that.

I agree with you and have been saying as much. I also have two K20DS with the latest firmware and walk circles around my K-7 in the high ISO dept.

The last three with the dark backrounds are meh.

Maybe, the A/D converter needs to be "burnt in."

But seriously, those shots look like poorly calibrated inkjet printer printounts. After looking at so many examples, the pattern noise is beginning to grow on me...like fungus on a lens.
