Using my own noise processing method, I decided to give LR3 Beta a try with some K20D ISO6400 images I had lying around. Here some some early results(5-15 mins. of PP ea.):

First candidate under inadequate florescent lighting:

Crop:

Second candidate under infrared heater lighting:

Crop:

Third candidate very low lighting(IR heater cast):

Crop:

Conclusion... with results like these... imagine what we could get out of Kx!!!

pretty impressive PP-NR work there JB. I still have to shoot above ISO 400 more often though. so a K20D and K-7 would be more than enough, unless I shoot under pitch-black, with no tripod and faster shutter speed for freezing motion (night action photo). but I think that would only be possible in a camera with a 25,600 ISO and higher. but as far as night shots are concerned, they are most likely done with a tripod and a flash.

the LR3 Beta does have an awesome NR tool. it does appear to remove unwanted noise effectively without the expense of losing detail and sharpness. and even able to enhance IQ further.

I should also mention that I used the following tools in processing these images.

1. GordonB's RAW Border Correcter
2. LR3-B2
3. Photoshop CS4
5. Niksoft Dfine

The rest is a culmination of creating seperate working layers and masking in select areas into a final composite. Which is much easier than it sounds.

Nice shot with lots of detail. I downloaded the largest size @ Flicker & strained my eyes looking for noise. That is ETTR in effect

Nothing spectacular, but I just decided to play around with taking some pictures of my cat tonight in my very-poorly-lit room at a high ISO. No PP.

This shot from last night surprised me in that there was no direct light on the subject at all, and not only was I shooting my K200D over 1.5 two stops underexposed at ISO 1600 (for the equivalent of around ISO 4500 or a little higher), but even then I was shooting at 1/15" just to get there. I really didn't expect to have anything usable at all. So I was quite happy to get this:

nicely done Marc. that photo somehow poses the argument of "who needs High ISO?" while you can post-process by using ETTR/ETTL methods and great NR tools (JB makes some really impressive NR work).

High ISO is mostly limited or somehow needed in situations that require it such as freezing the action or in a mad rush taking candid pictures at really low light situations. it's a matter of how often you shoot that kind of photography. but as most night or lowlight photography is concerned, a tripod or use of a flash or other lighting equipment has always been the best way of getting optimal results.

Amazing indeed! The blur which is present @ 1/15th only highlights the magic of the shot: we can intimate the sound of music from the blur on the fingers of his right hand--splendid.
