Mickey Mouse???

My new 540GFZ arrived this afternoon, and I'm now to the point where myself, the wife, and the dogs all have our retinas permanently stapled to the back of our eyeballs (not that our retinas were detached to begin with...).

I haven't quite got all of it figured out yet, nor began to figure out how to use it to best advantage, but that will come and already I'm seeing all kinds of possibilities I never had before. Have to thank my buddy with his D200 and Speedlight for letting me play and hooking me into getting something similar for myself.

Only one negative impression so far. And I just gotta ask this:

Am I the only one that thinks the battery compartment cover is unbelievably Mickey Mouse and almost guaranteed to break in no time at all? Watching it flop around when open and lining up the tiny little tabs to close the thing... it just doesn't look like a recipe for long term success. About all I could think was "Well, at least it looks like it will be easy to replace when it finally does calve."

Other than that, so far I love it. Wish I'd treated myself to a really good flash many years ago, now.

I've been very pleased with my 540 - but yes, I agree, the battery door seems a bit odd. It's more flash than I probably needed but sure is nice

Calling the battery door on the 540 Mickey Mouse is insulting to Mickey... It is positively Goofy!

But Ive not managed to break it yet and believe me I am not a sympathetic user...its just a bit hard to close when its got batteries in.

The '540's little brother, the AF-360FGZ also has an totally horrible battery door. Having said that, this has caused no *real* problems so far.

Can one of you guys tell me if the '540 has a battery meter? I find the lack of one on the '360 a bit annoying.

I don't have it in front of me, but I don't recall it having a meter for battery - seems it wouldn't be hard to put one in. Not sure how accurate it would be though

Unbelievably poor door for sure.
