Pentax K7 or Canon 500D?

It is an unfortunate thing to compare the professional level camera of Pentax with the Canon's entry level camera 500D. However, if you observe the two, you will get a disappointing conclusion.

1, Canon 500D has 15 million pixels, more than 14.6 million for K7.

2, Canon 500D has much cleaner picture than K-7. Just look at the comparasion
Canon EOS 500D Review - Image Quality | PhotographyBLOG

Pentax K-7 Review - Image Quality | PhotographyBLOG

It is seen that ISO3200 for 500D is just equivalent to ISO800 for K7

3, Canon 500D has FULL HD movie, but K7 does not have.

4, Canon 500D has almost all the functions that K7 boasts, such as Dynamic Range Expansion, Anti-Shake(Lens), Self-Cleaning, Fast Focus. In addition, Canon is known to have the accurate metering, in stead of dark Metering for Pentax.

In sum, there is nothing that is unique to K7 except the 100% viewfinder, but does it worth the extra $1500-$800=$700????????????

The worst thing for K7 is that the IQ does not improve much. It is a big drawback for Pentax.

I'd rather have a low-noise 10 million pixel camera than have a noisy 14.6 million camera, not to mention the fact that pixel # for 500D is 15 million.

In sum, 500D is much much better than K7. I will not spend extra money to become a Pentaxian.

If by "you" you really mean YOU, then sure. Not me though.

You're talking about a difference of 0.4 Megapixels. Really? That's significant to you? Either you're really ignorant or are a troll. Which one is it? I should probably stop responding, but I've got this bad habit of replying when I shouldn't. Oh well

This is an easy trap to fall into, so you get a free pass on this. I don't typically subscribe to the Canon-noise-reduction-smudges-away-details conspiracy theory, but in the case of the 500D it's really true. They've managed to keep noise to a minimum by sacrificing detail.

500D has 1080p at 20 frames per second. 20. That makes 1080p a useless resolution to use, which means its highest usable res is 720p.

And? Some of the 500D's features aren't available in the top-of-the-line 1-series cameras. Does that mean the 500D is better than the 1DsIII or 1DIII? And to say that the 500D has anti-shake because you can buy lenses to attach to it that have Image Stabilization is laughable.

Just off the top of my head, K-7 has these compared to 500D:
  • 100% pentaprism viewfinder vs. less-than-100% pentamirror with less magnification
  • Full weather sealing vs. no weather sealing
  • Solid metal body vs. plastic body
  • 9 cross-type AF points vs. 1
  • 5.2 fps vs. 3.5 or so
  • Deeper shot buffer
  • Pre-shot composition adjustment using sensor shift
  • Digital level indicator

I'm sure I'm missing a few, but that's what I remember right off hand. I can't claim that those extra features are worth the price difference since that's a personal call, but you're really short-changing the K-7 in your analysis. And this is coming from a Canon user.

Sensor based IS / SR
HDR mode
1536 by 1024 video vs. just 720P
A Better video codec
A MIC INPUT for said video
Aperture/EV controls for video, where canon's 500d has nothing

Don't get all the price knocks on the K-7, it's where it should be. It's a much better camera than the Rebels and D90s, d5000s etc.

You're just a troll. So, my response goes to whoever has the bad luck reading the above bullshit:

It is all wrong. The opposite is true. To give just one example: K-7 records (almost) full HD movie at 3:2 1024p@30fps while 500D doesn't (20fps only!).

Hello amphysics and welcome to the forum...
some people here take things really personal as soon as you speak badly about their toys...

Anyhow trying to answer your question:

if you look at the details in the picture you linked by the K7 and the 500D there is a huge difference (example: font edges are sharp in the K7 pictures whereas those of 500D are really soft).
Consider that from a picture with no details and not much noise it is hard to get the details back; from a picture with a lot of details and also noise you can add on top some noise reduction (NR) to get rid of noise and partially details.

Furthermore, I have not seen any indication of the level of NR used in the K7 pictures; note that it has 4 different settings from no NR to strong NR.

Yohan Pamudji answered very well for the rest.... and I am sure there is still plenty of fine custom settings that the 500D lacks

The picture that shows K-7 noise is made with a pre-production sample. It doesn't have the production sensor and production firmware, so it is useless.

Hey amphysics, I like Canon cameras.I have owned the 5D and 20D in the past, and am toying with the idea of a 5DII, but have you actually held a Rebel?I have and they are freaking toys compared even to my Pentax K10.Might want to play around with one before coming to that conclusion.

And yet, you felt you had to come here and announce your decision. Why is that, exactly? Bored? Lonely? Insecure, perhaps?

I bought K10D, my first DSLR, in 2007. The experience is awful with many problems, among which the most important one is particle noise above ISO 400.

Among various aspects for a camera, the most useful one is High ISO performance. I'd rather have a 10 million pixel K-7 with the High ISO performance compared with Nikon D3 than have a 14.6 million one with bad performance. That is why I want to buy a 500D.

I like Pentax, but my K10D really hurts me.(Not to mention that the image for my K10D is still tilted by 1 degree)

ok, I'll give you $2 if you leave. And then you can go buy your 500D and be happy.
