I haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but I did install the firmware update. I'll test it within the next couple days and report back if either the update fixed it, or if it has to go back to Pentax. Really sucks if I have to send it back. I have alot of events coming up in the next month and really don't want to go back to using my previous camera.

Ok, I did a few exposures indoors just to test it out. After a few shots, the green line is back. Looks like im either sending it to Pentax for repair, or returning it where I got it for a refund and getting something else.

Very true. I'm just going to have to wait until the end of October to send it in. The warranty card that came with the camera says the repair facility is in Arizona. Maybe it won't take long to repair?

Green Banding?

Hi all,

I've just bought a k7 and have promptly updated to the latest 1.01.xx13 firmware version.

however, to my horror, i have not just a green line, but a green banding halfway through my outing. (after ard 20mins of keeping the camera on. LV was off). Did i get a more serious case of the GLS?

Some points to note:
1) my shots at the start of the night did not have any visible banding.
2) the green banding appears at all high ISO
3) the green banding was only visible in my nightshots of the sky. i didn't note any banding when i shot in slightly brighter situations (at ISO800)
4) when i got home, i tried to shoot in low light and in darkness on dark objects and there was no green band.

Attached is a sample of a photo with the green banding:

Can someone shed some light on the situation? Is a trip to the service center unavoidable?

This looks very similar to my K-7 problem. After trying several firmware updates, nothing changed much. Mine is on the way together with the guys from Croatia Pentax to Paris Pentax central for checking.

I am a lazy old man, would someone remind me please if the green line exists in the same shots of RAW files too as well as jpegs?

All I know is that it did fix mine. I am surprised that Pentax has not released an ''official'' firmware fix though.

One thing to try since you were doing night shots is to block the viewfinder before the shot is taken. It is possible that light entering the finder is scattering onto the sensor somehow.

It doesn't work that way. There is no possible path from the viewfinder to the sensor because mirror is up and shutting off any light from above. Light through the viewfinder can only lead to wrong exposure readings.

That is what I thought, the only time a light leak through the view finder causes an issue is with metering. After that the mirror is out of the equation.

Hope they figure out this odd variation of GLS...worst I've seen...might be something different.

All I know is that there was a previous thread a couple of months ago where this situation was discussed and it *was* found that light through the viewfinder was creating spurious patches on the final image. It should not be a concern as you say, but there was a definite correlation.

That would be good info to be had if you could find the thread. Really, because this poster's GLS is sure different from others I have seen around the web.
