Pentax K20D, K-7 and Canon 50D high ISO compared

Not sure if this link has been posted yet, but to my untrained eyes it does not unfortunately look like K-7 has less high ISO noise than K20D. Could be on the contrary actually. It seems the pictures originate from Imaging-Resource, but having searched briefly I wasn't able to find it there.

?????????: Pentax K-7 vs. Pentax K20D vs. Canon EOS 50D at ISO1600-6400 : Details of the test samples by IR are compared.

EDIT: damn, can't read or write...

Quite possible, that was my first reaction looking at my K-7 pictures since 1-2 days but I'm waiting to get my K20D back from repair to make direct comparisons. Hopefully it should be today as the UPS guy left a note yesterday...

You may be right. In the highlights the K-7 seems to have more detail, though. The 50D wins either way.

In any event, it is more than good enough for me.

Are those jpegs or raws?

Interesting to see how well the 50D holds detail at high ISO. Thought it would be more smeared.

It seems these are combined crops from Imaging-Resource's pictures. And the Asian (Japanese, Korean, Chinese?) website seems to tell they're camera-JPGs without noise reduction.

Why are they bothering to compare the K20/K7 with the 50D?

The real comparison should be with the Nikon D90, which is the best APS-C sensor for low-noise to date, as even Imaging Resources images highlight.

Well, 50D would be the closest Canon model. Not sure why they left the D90 out.

I haven't done any low light high ISO shooting with mine but ISO 1600 is crisp and clean as can be which really impressed me...

Thanks much for posting this, emr. Very useful side-by-side comparison. I was hoping (unrealistically, I suppose) that Pentax would change the curve vis a vis High ISO with the K-7, but these images suggest behavior similar to that of my K20D.

Again, thanks.
