for starters I do own both --- I was playing around tonite comparing the noise levels between these two ( specifically iso 1600 and 3200 ). Parameters ---- same scene ( low light tungsten i.e. one 100 watt bulb ) both cams set on program. Please do not give me any grieve on the set-up, I am not going to shoot these test files in RAW and spend 2-3 hours tweeking the files, those days are over for me, so I shot jpg. My observations straight out of the gate ---- the D90 killed the K7, however I then started to mess with the settings on the K7. Specifically the white balance was re-set to tungsten which helped and also I dialed in +1 exp comp. The K7 was underexposing in this particular lighting. Conclusion - after messing with these settings the results seemed better for the K7 but still a little bit short of the Nikon. I know there will be those who will say that my methods are not scientific and not to be too blunt, but I really do not care. My theory is that if you set all of these tests up and try to get everything "perfect" you end up shooting in a manner that is not a real world scenario. My next trick will be to do some more unscientific tests with both of these DSLR's when I get some free time. It may be tomorrow or could be 2 months from now.

oh --- and I am thrilled with the K7 it is not going back because I do love my DA Limited primes and coming from my K10 ( which I still have ) it is one sweet DSLR.

kmanlaker, I believe that the problem with the hi-rez photos is that Flickr doesn't allow access to the hi-rez photos that you uploaded unless you upgrade to the "pro" account...which I'm sure you don't want to do just for this (it's like $20 a year or something). So, sounds like you must give up then. You could check out pbase instead. I've never used it but you might be able to host full-rez files there for free.

Sorry guys but the full-rez thing is probably flickr's fault, so don't jump all over him, he's genuinely trying to show his point. Then, after you see his full-rez files if it happens, then you can make your judgement.

thank you --- and i appreciate your humor --- please bear with me -- i am still trying to figure out how to link hires images. if i do not do this tonite i will not be able to get back on it until monday. I will be drinking beer and soaking up the sun at my weekend cottage ( no internet, no cable -- just a fridge full of domestics sprinkled with a few imports )

The flickr free accounts have a size (per photo and total number of photos) limit but the pro accounts don’t have a size limit. So to get a full size JPG of the D90 or the K7 you would need a pro account then you could link the photos.

I also see (if I did the math correctly) there is a 1/3 stop in the shutter/f/stop between the k7 and the D90. That may just be the differents in t/stop between the Nikon zoom and the Pentax prime lens. I haven’t looked to see if there is differents in exposer in the photo.

it make sense to me -- I own both systems , and i prefer the ergomnics of pentax over nikon, especially when it comes to autofocus point selection etc
hey who says i cannot own two systems anyways ??? oh i forgot i live in the usa and with the socialistic propoganda going on in this country we will soon be limited to only buying uncle sam approved equipment ( sorry for the rant )

I thought i recall reading somewhere that Pentax took a minimalist approx to reducing noise?

I thought Pentax liked to do less noise reduction in camera so that you as the photographer have more controll later?

Perhaps i am missing the point.

Perhaps the raw images with no NR don't come out acceptable enough that Pentax would come into scrutiny for not coming close to its competitors in noise control...

You probably aren't seeing things when you see the D90 doing better than the K7 at high ISO, esp if the K7 sensor is still essentially the same as the K20D.

i did not mean it that way
its just that i am sick of reading apples vs oranges
people are always comparing
i own a K20D and i am very pleased, i will have a K7 by mid next month, and it is suppose to be better than the K20D, so i now i will be pleased.
i am not against comparing, but do us Pentaxians who does not have a K7 yet a big favour and do some comparison shots, reviews, with the K7 vs the K20D or the K10D so we can see, how great a system we are getting into when we upgrade
We Pentaxians dont care about Nikon nor Canon
